Today’s photos come from Borneo courtesy of reader Daniel Shoskes. His notes are indented, and you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.
Just back from an incredible trip to Borneo. Just a smattering of the photos. Please forgive the lack of precision in species naming; I did my best to get the names from our guides.
First, a video of his whole trip can be seen here.
Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus):
Bornean Bearded Pig (Sus barbatus):
Silvered leaf monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus):
Flying squirrel climbing a tree (I have an amazing video of it gliding):
Macaque striking a Review #2 pose:
Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus), smallest species of bear:
Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus):
Juvenile female, nose not as pronounced:
Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) laying eggs and getting measured and tagged:
Newly hatched turtles about to be released to the sea:
Macaque mother and baby:
Crocodile with monitor lizard in its mouth:
Oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris):
Monitor lizard:
Black-and-red broadbill (Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos):
Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) :
An insect eating bat (species unknown) curled up asleep inside a banana leaf:
Tiger leech (Haemadipsa picta). Amazing to see: when you exhale near them they lunge towards the CO2:
Red leaf monkey (Presbytis rubicunda):

Great pictures, Danny!
Good pictures. Some great ones there.
These are wonderful pictures. Looks like an amazing trip!
Daniel, this looks like you had a great nature trip! Was this a tour, or did you stay at a lodge?
We travelled with NatHab (Natural Habitat Adventures)
Brilliant photos. What an amazing place.
Great photos! You saw so much.
Thanks for sharing.
Amazing photos. Thanks for sharing.
Great pix! Scary about that leech!
Ended up with a tiny one on my wrist and a big one that got through my shirt onto my abdomen that bled for about 30 minutes (I think they inject an anticoagulant when they latch on). Not fun!
The idea of something as small as the Tiger leech of lunging for you “when you exhale” seems moderately scary, and apparently deservedly so!
The proboscis monkeys remind me of Rastapopoulos: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastapopoulos
Ah, such a mood/feeling from these – inspiring.
I see that there’s an insect-eating bat, but is there a bat-eating insect? Maybe the Rhinoceros Beetle. Just asking.
Great pictures from an awesome adventure.
Great photos of poorly-known animals. What a rich trip you had!
My wife loves orangutans. I think that if I were an orangutan, my wife would still have married me.
Cobras exist in Borneo, right? How do these primates manage to coexist with them?
A helluva set! I’d love to visit such a place!
Thank you for this welcome reminder that there are still such wonderful animals in the rainforests!
Fabulous trip, great photos! That cerulean blue and lemon yellow beak on the black and red broadbill is wild. Loved the primates.
These are stunning photos! What a great trip you had, thanks so much for sharing these with us.
I was relaxed, watching the set, and then startled! Great emotional shots. First startle was the croc eating the monitor. I was relieved after seeing a monitor alive and well. And that tiger leech! No thanks. The variety of species you photographed is truly amazing.
