Edit function working?

April 29, 2021 • 12:06 pm

Normally you have 15 minutes to edit your comments after you post them. I have one email from a reader who says this function isn’t working. If it’s not working for you, either, please let me know in the comments, and I’ll work on having it fixed if it’s a general issue.

  1. I just edited a post on today’s Hili with no problems at all. If it helps, I’m using an Amazon Kindle fire.

Edit: I’m using the default browser, and haven’t customised anything.

  2. Brave browser in iSlowS 12.5.2 (iPhone 6 end of life): edit function does not work.

    Works on iOS 14.5 though

Haven’t updated yet. Have not checked other browsers.

  3. It’s been a little wonky today: there was one post in particular that I repeatedly edited apparently successfully, but as soon as I refreshed the page it reverted to the original that I’d been trying to correct.

  4. Edit left the building for me at least a week ago. I use Google Chome. Edit is simply gone.

  5. I had this problem a day or two ago. I had rebooted Chrome before editing and thought this might somehow be connected. So I added a reply instead and when that posted I had time left to edit both the original post and the reply. Gives me pause to think of interacting with an AI 😕

    1. Not an encouraging sign that, when the singularity comes, the AI will be benign, is it? 🙂

ETA: I wrote this comment on my desktop, and the edit function suddenly reappeared. Go figure.

    1. Nope, no editing, and it took 2 minutes and several refreshes before my comment appeared. This is typical for me, no matter what wifi I connect to with this iPhone 11.

  6. Edit test … the Edit is working fine.

But the original post … the line is only partially displayed
    Using Edge

  7. On Mac with Safari, it seems to have not worked at least 5 or 10 times in the last month. Also sometimes my damn internet is so slow that nearly or even more than 15 minutes have elapsed before it shows up. The page shows when renewed, but still hasn’t got the (much too lengthy!) remark by me on it. Then later it does have.

    1. Tested this, it showed just about 90 seconds later, and ‘edit’ did show this time.

  8. The ‘edit’ function often (but not always) appears on my phone, never on my desktop. Half of the photos and videos don’t appear on my desktop either, so I go to my phone.

  9. The edit function always works on my PC. But when I comment on my iPad, sometimes the comment doesn’t show up immediately and when that happens, I can’t edit. I don’t consider a big problem though.

    1. Strangely enough, I wrote the above comment on my PC, it posted immediately, and the edit function didn’t appear. So perhaps something strange is going on now.

  10. Edit test. This was edited.

However, when posting via the wordpress reader, no editing is possible for me (on an ipad). I prefer it as it shows replies, while the website version doesn‘t (it doesn‘t show the wordpress top bar at all).

  11. I find that the appearance of the editing option is hit and miss. Sometimes I will post a comment, refresh the page, and there is no edit button. Sometimes I will navigate away and come back, and there is an edit button.

Now there was an edit button when the comment loaded. Perhaps the issue is when comments are approved and not automatically allowed.

    1. Testing using MS Edge

Yep, this line editing. Works on MS Edge.

On Chrome: No link for editing.

  12. > It has lately been “off and on”, meaning sometimes it loads the edit feature, and sometimes it does not.
    > Also, sometimes my comments post immediately, and sometimes they do not. But they appear maybe 5 min. later. If I go to the WordPress website they appear there right away. But edit does not run over there.

    1. I can confirm that there is no option to edit using Chrome.

Also, I tried to post this message using Chrome (now using Safari), and that message did not show up.

  13. Trying to add a comment on Safari on a Mac …

And the edit functionality seems to be working for me.

Second edit: My Mac is running High Sierra, and Safari is version 13.1.2 for the geeks in the audience.

  14. I editted my hili comment this morning with no problems. I am a geezer who still uses safari. AND i am now editing this comment! Using ipad.

    1. If you are using Google Chrome, you are the product not the customer. Good luck. Using Safari on an iPad. I could add the last three sentences with the edit option with over 12 minutes left to edit.

      1. >If you are using Google Chrome you are the product not the customer.

As opposed all those other wonderful services that would never do that?

      2. > If you are using Google Chrome, you are the product not the customer.

Isn’t it a bit like broadcast TV? We get the content for free but “pay” by having to watch commercials. Google offers many of their services for free (search, maps, docs, spreadsheets, gmail, etc.). The price is that they advertise to us. Seems like a fair deal to me. Also, the Chrome browser isn’t much different from any of the other mainstream browsers.

  15. Bugger! I had no idea at all that there was any edit feature on WordPress for recent posts. There I was sitting there after a reread, upset that my profound words had somehow come out garbled.

  16. Although Chrome may be the problem child now, the edit function did used to work in Chrome until about two weeks ago for me. I noted its disappearance in a comment at the time.
