It’s May 3, and the weather continues to improve in Chicago. But it’s Tuesday, the most depressing day of the week. On this day in 1921, the partition of Ireland into Northern and Southern Ireland took place, and, in 2003, New Hampshires famous rock formation the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed.
Those born on this day include Pete Seeger (1919), James Brown (1933), Franki Valli (1934), and Christopher Cross (1951), all musicians. Not many deaths of notables on this day; one is Jerzy Kosiński, who died in 1991. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, the Princess is ticked off. She really needs a catflap, but I suspect that even if she had one she’d still want to be carried inside.
Hili: I was meowing and you didn’t hear me. I was scratching and you didn’t see me.A: And?Hili: I was peeved.

Hili: Miauczałam, a nie słyszeliście mnie, drapałam, a nie widzieliście mnie…
Ja: I co?
Hili: Obraziłam się.
As lagniappe, the cherry trees in Dobrzyn are in full bloom, and Hili is out a lot roaming among them:
Finally Gus was filmed making a Big Jump; here are the notes from staff Taskin:
Here’s a short Gus video. This jump is impressive to me because it goes over the stairway, so it’s a long way down if he misses. Doesn’t faze him at all though: he sure sticks the landing.

I think I can Jesus looking at the pussy cat.
I am converted.
As they say in the classics, “Doh!”. Should have been can ‘see’ Jesus, oh well.
…and today is Teacher’s Day. Congratulations to all the teachers on WEIT. I did a little teaching myself and I know it is very challenging (and rewarding). Teachers at every level, from primary through graduate school, deserve a great deal of respect and admiration for the critical work they do. Let’s hear it for the teachers!
Re Gus, cats are marvels of small reaction times in small packages, but they plan badly. I remember chasing a young cat of our neighbors because my Mom yelled “No” when he slipped in. She then yelled that she afraid of having cat pee in the upper floor sofa.
Running up the stairs I meet the cat, that had run a lap over the beloved sofa and returns to the open stair well. As she wanted to avoid me she started to run out the stair well. It was like a funny movie. I could see the cat froze in real time with both fore paws in the air and 4 m down going “oops, I forgot that”.
Unfreezing really quickly she turned her front body slightly and got one paw onto the stairs. She passed me at full speed again with a shorter jump to the lower stair section at the fold point of the stairs. Clever girl!
Um, cat pee. I guess it was a male cat at that.
The leap from the windowsill is fair. But the leap onto the sill had a much more constrained landing. And that’s harder. As my gibbering failures on the rock climbing route “Double Dyno Or Die” convinced me, many years ago. In 1980s rock climbing EN_GB_RC, a “dyno” is basically jumping for a hold. The “die” part of the name was rhetorical, as sensibly placed gear would slow you down enough to plummet into the North Sea instead of catering. But swimming with 20kg of gear round your waist is … challenging.
Katz haz klaws … but crampons were considered cheating at sea-level. Could have done with then at the weekend tho
The leap to the windowsill is especially impressive, although Gus is completely nonchalant about it. It’s hard to predict when he’s going to make the jump to the window, so I’ve only been able to document him on the return.
Taskin, meet the concept of motion-triggered cameras ; motion-triggered cameras (including … there’s an Open Source app for that … I toyed with ZoneMinder a while ago), meet Gus’ publicity manager.
I like Gus 🙂
me too…
Hili seems to be channelling Jesus, except that J didn’t just say “I was peeved”, he said “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels”. (Matthew 25)
Gorgeous cherry orchard and Hili! Thanks.
Oh, the cherry orchard! Such lovely blossoms and such promise of good noms to come. Hili, being a carnivore, can’t possibly appreciate it; too sad.
