While my ukelele gently weeps

May 2, 2016 • 4:30 pm

It’s been a long and hectic day, and I want to go home. I had a lot of stuff to say today, but got sidetracked by the plagiarism issue and trying to suss it out.

Here’s a nice ukelele rendition of George Harrison’s “While my guitar gently weeps.” Jake Shimabukuro is the musician. I guess I had no idea you could play stuff like this on the uke.

Jake has more videos here.

  1. If you like the ukulele you may want to check out “Tell you what” by Brittni Paiva on youtube.

  2. When we first heard the White Album, a friend and I were certain that the lyrics to “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” were possibly the most brilliant deadpan poetic self-parody we had ever heard. History has placed that opinion in a miniscule minority.

  3. The final song at “The Concert for George” was “I’ll see you in my dreams”(1924) performed by Joe Brown on ukulele. I assume it was chosen because of George’s love of the instrument. Quite moving.

  4. Jake came to Juneau a few years ago and it was a spectacular performance. Highly recommend seeing him if anyone gets the chance.

  5. Came along too late for me to have seen him in Hawaii. Was there in the 1980s. The name is Okinawan so probably from there several generations back. Very fine player.

    1. Bob Culbertson is, in my opinion, the best Stick player of all. I remember when the first Chapman Stick videos came out on YouTube some ten or so years ago, I was fascinated. It has evolved considerably since, there now is a wide variety of different Sticks.

  6. Love it! He incorporates nice touches of his own personality and the characteristics of the ukulele.

  7. If you like brilliant playing on instruments of few strings, google “Алексей Архиповский, YouTube”….

  8. I was reminded today of one of the bullies from my school – 2IC of the rugger team, unsurprisingly. He played the ukulele too.
If I ever win the lottery, I must devote a small but vindictive amount to private dices to spill the dirt on him. Dish served cold and all that.

  9. Wow. Way more fun than hijab or plagiarism. Thank goodness for music and art and books in this world. Thanks for this video. I was going to remark on the hijab issue, but looked at this first, and my angry feelings about the subjugation of women dissapated for a while…
