Football trifecta: England/Italy highlights, John Oliver on the World Cup, and Cats playing footie

June 15, 2014 • 6:06 am

First, here are the goals from Italy’s 2-1 victory over England yesterday (watch soon, for FIFA’s watching too!):

On last Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” show, John Oliver extols football but takes down FIFA. I’ve never seen this guy, but this is pretty funny:

And what  could be more appropriate than this? The video seems to be from Japan, and the cats pretty much suck. But let’s face it—they’re better than Brazil.

And your lagniappe:

Check out the new Google Doodle, again with a World Cup Theme.

And here are the noises one hears in Brazil (in this case São Paulo) when their team is playing in the World Cup. This is from the Brazil/Croatia game that, well, didn’t turn out so well for the green and yellow.

  1. Somebody pointed me to that Oliver video the other day. My first thought was that they’re trying to make the IOC look like a bunch of choirboys. My next thought was that the IOC is trying to return the favor….

  2. Brazil did beat Croatia 3 – 1, correct? In soccer a win is vital. The style of it matters little. Sometimes you get the tiki taka of Spain and Barcelona, sometimes you get park the bus defense like Italy or Chelski. But winning is dadgum difficult regardless.

  3. The cats in the last video are wearing the flag of Côte d’Ivoire… so they won 🙂

    Go, Elephants!

  4. Jerry, are you sure you’ve never seen John Oliver? He used to be one of the “correspondents” on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show*. Apparently he’s gone off on his own.

You’d probably enjoy watching the rest of the Last Week Tonight videos.

    * Maybe you don’t watch Jon Stewart–I know I discovered his show through one of the bloggers I follow. I guess that wasn’t you.

    1. What Lynn said… John Oliver then substitute-hosted The Daily Show for several months when Jon Stewart was on vacation, and did a truly outstanding job filling some large shoes. I’m thrilled to see him with his own show, even if I only get to watch it rarely.

    1. Love John Oliver. The Fair and balanced climate change was brilliant – and this FIFA bit.

  5. FIFA. They are real winners aren’t they. Quatar?? I just saw England and Italy in, what, 81 F heat and they thought they were going die of heat exhaustion. I guess every stadium will be air conditioned. What a triumphant waste of human resources.
