Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
We just adopted a new kitten, a tortie – as sharp as a tack – she sits on my wife’s lap whenever we watch TV and really pays attention to what’s going on. The dog and the older cat couldn’t care less about TV.
That’s classic tortie. They are very smart (snd know it!). My neighbor’s tortie always watches the kitteh cam with her.
You’re killing me with teh cuteness!
I get a great reaction from Merlyn when we watch Animal Planet or Nat Geo, those times when there are actually wild predation shows on. African veldt, especially.
Hmmm…I might need to fire up some Attenborough for Baihu, see what he thinks….

Great! Video confirmed that my attention span is less than that of 10 week old kittens!
You have ten kittens? Cool! What’s a tent shim? Yummy! Spam!

Not watching — judging! That’s the Itty Bitty Kitteh Committeh grading teh skater and pointing out points!
A possible spinoff to MST3K, KST3K.
Looks like the mama cat on their left.
One of the fascinating things about watching them is that they surely must know – particularly after the first attempt – that what they are watching is ‘behind/in/is’ something solid and they cannot catch it by attempting to catch it. But their ‘grab the moving thing’ instinct is strong enough that they try to catch it anyway.
I wonder what some parallel behaviors might be in humans…..
Hitting the elevator button repeatedly, and with more agitation, even knowing it won’t make the slightest difference.
No more need be said.
Except “it’s a good job kittens aren’t about the same size as people.”
😀
Don’t you just hate sitting behind the kitty family at the cinema!
Oh bless – some of the kitties were trying to join in ! How sweet.
No doubt about it, kittens are cute all over the globe! (And never fail to amuse me.)
I want to adopt them 😐
Just shown this to ‘she who must be obeyed’ and she said “fancy taking kittens to an ice-rink”
Well that’s blonds for you!!!!! 😉
Cats will also try to catch bowling balls and golf balls on TV. From the front, the sides and on top of the set. (I grew up with cats, and dogs, and birds, and fish, and hamsters, and snakes…)
I used to have a cat who loved hockey. He would watch entire games, batting at the puck going back and forth across the screen. He was much better at knowing where the puck was than I ever got.
Cute, and the skater was pretty impressive too.
That’s entertainment.
