Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
Looks like the real deal. You have now personally seen nearly all the penguins but one. This is penguin overload.
Nope. Magellanic (tomorrow) and rockhoppers (Tuesday) to come!
Macaroni can be seen if lucky?
Be swift, my soul, to answer; be jubilant my feet.
You’re in Lala land. (Lala the penguin, that is.)
Yay! The king penguins!! And you saw the gigantic fluffy chicks, too!!!!!! They’re my favorite. Sure hope that one of those big babies waddled over to you and put it’s head in your lap since a ‘spiritual experience’ is okay.
The one with the white belly and partially fuzzed flippers must be molting.
Others in various stages of molting in the photo above the one I cited.
Though they’re not in Antarctica, nonetheless I hope that you get to see rockhopper penguins rock hopping. They have big brown fuzzy chicks, too.
WOW!
… BTW, that’s a great way to generate a buzz over a post – teasers.
What gorgeous birds!!! As ThyroidPlanet said, WOW!
Btw, does this mean royalty is okay now?
In penguins, yes, but not in New Zealand, where I understand the Queen remains the Queen of New Zealand, too! 🙂
Amazing!
Wow! Lucky you. I am so happy that you are getting to see all of these great species.
Bruce, I thought you’d answer my question about why Upland Geese are sexually dimorphic (and whether the male Magellanic steamer duck is the one with the orange bill)!
According to the Handbook of the Birds of the World (Del Hoyo et al)both sexes of Magellanic Duck (Tachyeres pteneres) have an orange bill. In the other two Tachyeres species ( T patachonicus the Flying Steamer Duck and T brachypterus the Falkland Steamer Duck, the bill colour is sexually dimorphic with males having orange bills and females a dull yellowish bill).
Further to the above I note from the previous post that the ducks you saw were on the Falkland Islands and were actually Falklands Steamer Ducks (T brachypterus) rather than Magellanic Ducks (T pteneres). The latter does not occur on the Falklands. In your photo the male is indeed the one with the orange bill.
You’re not the only one who trolls with that line, Jerry. I’m antiwar, antiAmerican jingoism, antitheist, and yet I somehow know the lyrics to Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Yay! Those are beautiful birds.
How mistaken one can be! I thought that since the Emperors (of which I knew they live on Antarctica proper, wearing out the winter) and Kings resemble each other, they would be the 2 penguin species living there, but we always learn. And what magnificent birds these Kings are!
Here we only have the Jackass aka African penguins. Cute little fellows. And curiously, since living on a continent, not just islands, very tolerant of even close approach.
