I’d guess it’s the mountain chorus frog.
The chorus frogs are quite similar to the spring peepers in size and breeding schedule. Both plus wood frogs show up in our pond as early as late March–ensues cacophony!
I’ll watch out for the difference next spring. I’m sure they have distinct vocalizations.
Oh, yes, that’s one of the best ways to distinguish them, unless you’re close enough to notice the peeper’s dorsal pattern.
Spring peeper, Pseudacris crucifer (in earlier literature, it’s in the genus Hyla).
Yes, you can see it’s a peeper by the little X on its back. I guess that’s why “crucifer”.
