Spot the katydid!

Reader Mark Sturtevant sent a “spot the katydid” photo (click to enlarge). He notes that “I am pretty sure [the readers] can since they are amazingly good at these sorts of things.”

Okay, give it a try. Reveal at 11 Chicago time:

  1. Took until the third scan over the maximally embiggened photo. Eventually the legs gave it away. But this one was hard.

    1. Same here. It would have been attached if a leaf instead of connected to the legs resting on the branch.

  2. Excellent! Nice one, Mark. The challenging ones are the most satisfying, when you finally spot it. There’s a grasshopper, too. Did anyone find it?

    1. I got it! It is a red-legged hopper. I am not surprised since this field has a huge population of Orthopterans, comprising at least 7 different species of grasshoppers alone.
