  1. How do you know how many follow your blog. I get your updates through Feedly, but do you know that? Just asking because I don’t know.

    1. He is talking about those who have officially signed up to follow – the infographic comes from the sidebar of the blog, and the tally which anyone can see for themselves is now up to 49,914.

        1. This is the desired outcome. WP desire it to feed you adverts ; ProfCC(E) desires it to know how many people read his blo^H^H^H website.

Non-trivially, as a significant effort in public outreach (50k followers, significant science discussion), it would bolster PCC(E)’s claim to office space and internet access via ChicagoU’s “fat pipe”. It may not be an issue at the moment but as political/ cost pressures mount in the foreseeable future, it”s probably good to get one’s defence in first.

      1. A challenge – a veritable challenge!
A prediction – a veritable prediction : creating duck-accessible internet terminals (an interesting challenge on several fronts) will lead to demands (Alt-Right, Alt-Left, and Alt-Duck?) for corn/ mealworm dispensers on all dabblable waters, cat (raccoon)-proof nest boxes, and all duck-related UniChicago courses to be presented in Hoomin and Duck …

To say nothing of the protests outside some anas-phile restaurants.

  2. Now might be a good time to check that the “manage” button doesn’t have any foul-mouthed god-squaddies and the like lurking in “moderation”. Cull them now, so you don’t have to do a re-count later.

    1. 91 to go. I feel a disturbance in the Force .. as if a half-dozen “beefers” have been wiped from the record.

  3. You should have at least 100x the followers you have! I would hate to see your inbox if that were the case.

    1. That’s why the 2-level system exists. If someone goes from “moderate (verb – examine) all posts” to “allow”, then their posts will only trigger an email+hold(pending moderation) if they include something in $RUDE_WORD_LIST$. Editing the $LIST$ might be built into WP – I dunno – but since the objectionable comments tend to be fairly predictable, with 50k followers (and maybe 200? regular posters), the email burden shouldn’t bee too horrible.

    2. 100x followers would be around 5 million.
That’s probably a large (>50%?) chunk of the scientifically literate population of the USA.
In turn, that suggests the question of what the geographic distribution etc of the readership / postership (not the same thing) population is at 50k.
Safe bet : PCC(E) has a post on this “in draft”.

  4. Alright, so lets carry out that syncronized unsubscribe we have been planning lets do it at 3:35pm tomorrow. /s
