Here’s the frogfish!

December 30, 2016 • 12:00 pm

This morning’s post showed a bizarre frogfish, but there was a hidden one in there, too—perhaps the male mate of the obvious one. Reader Carl sent both the photo and the reveal (below). Did you spot the smaller one?

Here it is—tail up:

  1. A difficult one indeed.

Was lucky to see a resident specimen on the Salem Express off Safaga. Ummm, a wreck I was more than a little guilty to dive but seeing the frogfish sure helped my mindset.

  2. I could be mistaken, but it looks like there’s a second frogfish It’s nearly the same color as the surrounding rock (yellow/tan), and is directly above the other frog fish. Tail pointed up as well. Look for the two eyes.

    Anyone else see it?

    1. PCC[e] tells us this at the top of THIS post: “This morning’s post showed a bizarre frogfish, but there was a hidden one in there, too — perhaps the male mate of the obvious one. [..] Did you spot the smaller one?”

  3. This totally fooled me. I thought it was the big one in the middle.

A TV production called Indonesia: Life in the Muck has incredible footage on this critter and many others. Can’t find any free online video of it.

    1. IIRC the work is from a channel off the coast of Lombok. (I saw a presentation by the filming crew of rough cuts a few years ago at a dive show.) Some particular … footage of something they called a “Bobbit Worm”. Made most of the men in the room practice re-ascending of the testicles.

    1. [Hums the shark theme from Jaws]
That film was on TV a couple of nights ago, and I can’t resist humming the theme when I’ve seen surfers shivering in the water since.

  4. Speaking of fishes, we have been blessed with David Attenborough’s three part series on the Great Barrier Reef over the last few nights. It’s interesting to see him revisit places that he first covered in documentaries in the 1950s!
