Zach Weinersmith of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is raising money on Kickstarter to finance a collection of his religion-themed comic strips. The project is “Religion: Ruining Everything since 4004 BC.” A bit of information:
What’s in the Book?
The book is a collection of the best religion jokes on SMBC over the last ten years! And, as a bonus, there will be a number of exclusive comics. The number will be determined by the amount of funding raised during the kickstarter.
Is This Book Mean to Religion?
Not really. Or, at least, the nature of the humor isn’t mean-spirited, but the comic does mock plenty of sacred concepts. If you are a religious person, we hope you laugh in the same way we hope science fans laugh at the science jokes in our last book.
Um. . . I wonder if Zach realizes the futility of that hope.
So far the project has has raised almost $70,000, and the rewards for contributing include a spiffy Abridged Bible. But what I like best, feeling somewhat self-aggrandizing today, is the two-minute video ad used to promote the project, which includes a cameo of the book I’m proudest of—and the one that’s least read. It’s 40 seconds into the video, and I’ve made a screenshot (click on it to go to Zach’s page):
Note that her hair is on fire! It’s the work of Satan. . .
UPDATE: Another pair of twe**ts:
@ZachWeiner @Evolutionistrue I'm about halfway through 🙂 Working through it for a reading group at Rice University

Well I just got a copy so there are a few more cents for your retirement fund! 😉
Is her hair on fire…or has the fire developed a body?

Is that his wife? Kelly Weinersmith is a parasitologist.

I’ve collected a list of Zach’s greatest SMBC comics. I’ll just put four here:

http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=3583#comic

I’ll say this much: I’d hate to be his kid when he gets into a joking mood!
And: Don’t forget to press the big red button at the bottom right of the comic for a postscript.
UPDATE: Zach hilariously promotes his new book. Here, _really_ don’t forget to press the red button:

As an ex- and dad I got a great kick out of #1 and #3. Fun stuff, thanks for the links. Though weird-takes-on-monster-under-the-bed stories are so common now that most 3-4 year olds wouldn’t be phased by #3.
In my experience, some religions have more a sense of humor about themselves as other, but it can be selective.
Unitarians really like Unitarian jokes. There are very few Buddhist jokes, but the few in circulation are appreciated. SOME Catholic jokes amuse SOME Catholics, but NOT ALL Catholic jokes NOR ALL Catholics. (But Jesuit priests really really like Jesuit jokes!!)
Muslims are utterly devoid of any sense of humor.
And the best Jewish jokes are those told by Jews…
The essential book on speciation, supersedes Mayr’s. Highly recommended for all evolutionary biologists.
Zach and Kelly Weinersmith responded to your tweet. Apparently Kelly is about halfway through your book:

Yeah, I just embedded this above. Way cool!
The SMBC Kickstarter seems to be having slightly more success than the Finding Proof: G*D Exists project, still stuck on $6.66 (BWAHAHAHA). Ten hours left as I write this though, so y’all better get a move on and subscribe.
I have been thinking of buying Speciation for some time, so I just checked the price on Amazon UK, where the hardback is listed at £999.11! Good for your retirement fund!
BTW, I only use Amazon for checking details, and I then order the book from my local bookshop. Amazingly, my little town of ~3,000 people supports a proper and independent bookshop.
Or the work of the Holy Ghost on Pentecost Sunday.
