I have landed!

September 22, 2015 • 12:01 pm

It was a long flight from Chicago to Warsaw, but I have arrived, been driven to Dobrzyn, and am now ensconced, somewhat jet-lagged, chez Andrzej et Malgorzata.

I was greeted by this sign on the gate, which got me excited until I learned that “Pies” means “d*g” in Polish (the sign means “Caution, d*g!”).

But there is a pie, for later tonight. Cherry, of course:

We went for a walk to the wide Vistula, with the moon rising over the water. Sadly, the Princess is still out on the tiles, but I hope to see her soon.

UPDATE: Hili appeared on the windowsill after dark, demanding to be carried in. I gave her one of the cans of Fancy Feast I brought from the U.S., which she ate with relish (and mustard). But now she’s asleep with Cyrus on the d*g bed–I fear I won’t get much Quality Hili Time.

  1. I’m following your exploits via Google Earth. I noticed the sign on the gate but couldn’t make it out from way up here. I’m now looking for Hili on the tiles. Wait. I’ll have to…enhance.

  2. Glad you made it safely to pieville and/or Hiliburg. Have a good nap, as you’ll need a lot of energy for all the noms to come.

  3. Oh dear, there is something darkly amusing about Jerry getting excited about pies, only to learn they are dogs.

  4. Whenever Jerry mentions that he’s seen Hili again I get this little tiny jump of surprise that she’s really real. Of course I know she is, but it still feels a bit like worlds coming together.

  5. Welcome to Europe once more! I wasn’t aware that it’s so close to the German border, only about 1,5 hours to Dresden, and about 2 hours to Berlin. If you weren’t there, consider a visit (Wrocław/Breslau is nice, too, I will add, was there twice).

  6. I’ll have to buy some Fancy Feast for Barn Cat; right now I’ve got cans of Sheba, plus the dry food, which he gets whenever I go out to check on my horse. Yes, he – La Reina is a neutered male cat, who has a name (Tabby) and 8 siblings, one of whom lives with the caretakers at the ranch. The vet techs where I take my dogs said it’s often more difficult to identify the sex of cats without inspecting them more closely than many cats will allow. I still felt kind of clueless.

Until fairly recently, Tabby had elderly staff who fed him lots, but sadly, the woman had to go into a nursing home, so several of the horse boarders (including me) now feed him. I bought a small food bowl that fits on a window ledge inside the tack barn, so Tabby has a quiet, safe place to eat.
