My dinner last night

From RJ Bar-B-Que in San Angelo, a highly rated establishment. It was very good, and authentic, but better specimens are available in my favorite places, notably the City Market in Luling, Texas.

I also had their homemade peach cobbler, which can’t be shown because it’s in my belly.

Combo plate: brisket/ribs, potato salad, beans, jalapenos, raw onions, and a slice of white bread, with sweet tea on the side:

  1. I don’t really go for this sort of food, but I guess it does illustrate the principle that sometimes innocuous looking restaurants have interesting things!

    1. Could be that you’ve never tried superlative examples of the cuisine. It’s far from the most sophisticated food you’ll ever eat, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anybody with a Michelin star who serves anything tastier than the creme-de-la-creme of barbecue joints.

  2. Did you eat the jalapenos? I enjoy whole pickled jalapenos myself. Whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant, I ask for a side of grilled jalapenos. They put on a little oil and a lot of salt. Yumz.

  3. I’m a big fan of Kansas BBQ myself. Never had Texas BBQ though. I will say that I have had much better luck in Wichita than in KC. If you’re ever near there, check out “Pig In! Pig Out!” BBQ. If you’re in KC, the drive to Wichita is a bit long (3 hrs), but it takes you through straight through the beautiful Flint Hills area.

  4. Try Smitty’s or Kreuz in Lockhart, Texas.

Might start a war here, but avoid barbecue smoked over mesquite. Live oak, post oak, blackjack oak are all superior for smoking meat.

  5. This answers the question (for me) why Texans talk ‘funny’ Regardless of taste, my delicate constitution would make ME ‘talk funny’ and probably all night.

  6. I do enjoy the barbecue when I visit my Texan girlfriend’s family! It is quite different from what I’m used to in North Florida/South Georgia.
