Greetings from the belly of the Beast

July 10, 2015 • 8:00 am
Reader Tom Czarny sent Jerry this really cool photo of himself with a certain book you all must have heard of by now.
I’m in Rome on a teaching gig but thought I ‘d take a day to do a bit of light heretical reading.

Selfies with Faith Vs Fact should definitely become a thing.

  1. I’d love to post a photo of myself with the book but seems release has been delayed, on Amazon at least, until the end of July!

Any other UK customers experiencing this?

    1. Mine turned up on Wednesday so they do definitely exist!

The book seems to be an American imprint so assuming that a limited number are coming over at a time.

      1. That is really bad. Maybe the sells are out-stripping the supply? Amazon should be answering for this.

    2. Yes – ordered aaaages ago as well! That is probaly why there have been no obvious UK reviews yet. Supposed UK publication date was almost 2 weeks ago I think…

People who know me may be getting this book as presents!

      1. The UK hard copy sales approach seems a bit slack. I was pleased when the ebook version became available at the US release date.

    3. A reader wrote to me about the UK delays; I’ve informed Viking, and it was a shipping problem. A fire has been lit under their tuchus, and I hope the book will be shipped very soon. (The reader who called it to my attention will be offered a free book).

  2. Why is it called a ‘selfie’ when it seems to be someone else taking his photo?

      1. Given the location, perhaps the Holy Father himself took it? In which case, we can call it a “Popie”.

    1. My suggestion is, load the cover screen on the reader, then face it toward the camera.

Don’t know about other readers but for the Kindle:
      1. Go to the start of the book, then swipe backwards a bunch of pages (because it starts you at the introduction, not the cover page).
      2. You’ll recognize the cover because it looks exactly like the print cover, only in B&W.

      1. Thanks. Much better on my iPad the cover comes out in color. Now I ask myself: Why do I need a selfie with Faith vs. Fact?

    1. I did just that, but only because I was headed into the basilica anyway and not to make a point. Nobody cared (and rightly so) about some middle-aged dude and what he had in his hands when instead he/she could be looking at the Bernini altar.

      1. Depending on what your were standing in front of, they’d probably be more concerned about the camera’s flash than the book you were holding.

Not to mention that many of the Vatican security personnel may not even read English.

        1. I think many humans feel more sympathy for animals than other people. I am one of those. I don’t know why and I don’t know if this is something that slowly emerged or I always felt it. I remember when I was 3 or 4 crying when my “pet” cactus died, and around the same time cried when a friend of mine squished a woolly-bug. When I was 5 or 6, my ‘great uncle’ died, who I knew, but not that well. I didn’t shed a tear. I don’t like other people suffering and have no schadenfreude for sure, but it is a perplexing response.

  3. St. Peter’s cathedral: one of those instances of faith creating fact. Perhaps creating grand structures like cathedrals buttresses the faith of the religious. It is also a good way to make money.

  4. I understand that some religious orders are encouraged to read “controversial stuff” so they can feel more self-righteous censoring them, or something …

  5. Not 100% on the spot but:
I took my copy of WEIT to Costa Rica in 2013.
The first time being exposed to the tropical splendor I had to take a picture with WEIT with the magnificent OSA peninsula (a place with a HUGE biodiversity) as a background.
Taking this picture I pitied all the disinterested in biology & the creationists (are they interested in biology?).

  6. Here’s as good a spotas any to complain of the hole in my tongue from biting it so hard when my yoga teacher, who usually pitches no woooooooo, brought up a free series (either online or on TV) by Deepfried Okra today. My lips remained sealed. Didn’t want to harsh my own mellow…

  7. Pictures with the book in different places with or without the reader should definitely be a thing!

    1. Marella, meet “Photoshop”.
      (Other image editors are available.)

      1. Aaaarrrghghgh, Photoshop! My kids wouldn’t thank you for suggesting I get into that!

  8. I have Marella’s problem! Fvsf on Kindle and the fear that meeting Photoshop would give rise to a relationship that would take up all my time…
