Today is an auspicious day, for it is the day that the infamous Monkey Trial began in 1925. Science teacher J.T Scopes, defended by Clarence Darrow was tried for teaching evolution in a Tennessee High School. Although Scopes technically lost his case and was fined $100; the intended damage had been done and the Creationist position was made to look ridiculous.
Hili is engaged in work no less important this morning, in fact it might be argued that she is being a very Helpful Cat.
A: What are you doing there?
Hili: I’m guarding this tree so that the starlings won’t ruin the cherries.

I have been promised pie every day when I’m in Dobrzyn in October. If there was a heaven, all its inhabitants would have cherry pie for breakfast every day.
…and the evidence keeps piling on in favor of evolution!! Evolution is like gravity and thermodynamics: irrefutable!!

I watched a blackbird, Turdus merula, scoffing cherries the other day – guess not your edible for humans variety. I LOVE bird cherry – Prunus padus – has far and away the prettiest flowers, perhaps with the exception of the genus Aesculus, & am hoping to get some when ripe from the trees outside where I live, in order to grow them if I can.
Lime trees, Tilia spp., are also in full flower & look fantastic, as if speckled with tiny stars.
My dad produced & acted in Lawrence & Lee’s ‘Inherit the Wind’ in the early 60s, & I must dig out the ‘introduction’ passage he wrote for the production (not sure why he did that). He was religious but in the usual C of E way, accepting evolution & science (I suppose with the exception that he must have thought some ‘miracles’ were possible, unfortunately).

Very interesting about your dad, Dominic. I know what you mean about having religious relatives. My sisters-in-law are not about to change, so just for a peaceful life, there’s sometimes quite a bit of tongue-biting going on.

Fruit pie wise, it doesn’t get any better than a well made cherry pie.
Especially with Malgorzata’s walnut crust, made from laboriously cracked and crushed walnuts from their orchard.
I absolutely love walnut crusts. It’s what Dad typically uses for his cheesecake….

We just made cherry pie and had it with whipped cream containing a touch of cream cheese. It’s definitely worth a little guard duty.
Although the movie did not exactly follow the original trial, even the original was turned into a Hollywood version. With Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan showing up it had to be big and different. Darrow turned it into an attack on religion which was never going to go well but was forced to this strategy because none of the scientist were allowed to testify.
It is a battle that continues throughout the U.S. today, just at it did nearly a hundred years ago. I thought the line from one of the people making the movie in 1960 kind of shows even their lack of understanding. The guy says — It is not about science vs religion. It’s about the right to think.
I kind of thought that was the same thing.

Cherries are great. I make cherry jam occasionally, but never very much because getting the pips out is a major pain in the arse.
