Monday: Hili dialogue

February 16, 2015 • 5:25 am

Oh hai! It is Monday, and Chicago had yet more snow yesterday. But, thank Ceiling Cat, it was light—nothing like in New England, where Boston had yet another blizzard yesterday, and so it’s had more snow in the past three weeks than in any entire winter in recorded history. It’s also President’s Day in the U.S.: a holiday in many places but not at the University of Chicago, where academics is srs bzns.

Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is cracking the whip on her staff.  I am a bit worried, I must say, as she looks rather “fluffy” these days.

Hili: We have to increase productivity.
A: We are doing the best we can.
Hili: This is not a good enough reason to be self-satisfied.

In Polish:
Hili: Musimy podnieść wydajność pracy.
Ja: Robimy co w naszej mocy.
Hili: To nie jest jeszcze powód do samozadowolenia.

    1. She is overweight, but it’s not as bad as it looks. Her pose makes her look rounder than she is, and she slims down in summer to normal weight when she spends most of the day roaming outside.

      Poor Hili!

  1. It’s a day off in Canada (Family Day). Canadians complained for ages that it sucked to have no time off until Easter and we had to endure the long winter darkness….so now we have Family Day. I think it’s one of those weird holidays though that the provinces have so it could be called different things or it falls on a different day.

I’m just glad I don’t have to go outside in that cold or make my poor car run in it.

    1. I suppose this isn’t the time to talk about what it’s like in a country that’s enjoying a wonderful summer? 🙂

      1. Yes, I have the weather for Auckland on my iPad and it looks like a lovely summer. It’s bad enough my friends in Victoria, BC put pictures of all the blooms that are out. It’s still chilly there at 10C but it is a much nicer winter than we get here in Ontario.

        1. Haha! I remember seeing that poster in the background on The Flight of the Concords TV show.

          1. That’s how I found it! Google “conchords New Zealand posters” and you’ll find them all. So many delightful sight gags involving sheep, landscapes and Lord of the Rings. And I hear Murray’s voice in my head when I read them.

            Present!

          2. The Murray character is funny. I loved how he talked to the guys like a dad talks to young children. I like when he explains that he doesn’t like his goatee but he grows it to look cool and keep up his image. I think Jermaine tries to guess why he doesn’t like it & says something like “it makes you look like a goat?”

  2. Nashville is shut down today by snow and ice. For the record, the most snow the city ever had was 17 inches, in 1892. But that’s vanishingly rare. I’ve been here 7 years and don’t even own a snow shovel.

    1. I shoveled more snow the first two weeks I was in Chicago than in the whole of my previous life (including 13 years in Nashville). Currently stuck in Brentwood, was supposed to be at Vanderbilt all day, but seems unlikely I’ll even get out of the development, Vandy has shut down classes, the local schools are closed and I can still see grass through the snow! This compares to the 20 or so inches of snow we had in Evanston a couple of weeks back – which essentially closed O’Hare airport but really didn’t shut down traffic on the roads. I suppose you can prepare for what comes regularly, not worth buying the equipment for what comes occasionally.

        1. In Canada, we call provinces who can’t handle the snow, “snow wimps”. Most of the country accuses Ontario of being “snow wimps” but Ontarians always deflect and say, “No! We’re not snow wimps! BC is the snow wimp!” and it works every time as everyone, jealous of Victoria and Vamcouver weather, unites in calling BC “snow wimps”.

That and hating Toronto is what unites the nation.
