PCC is back and a panda’s first sight of snow

January 6, 2015 • 4:43 pm

I have returned to Chicago to find it bloody cold and covered with snow. And to think it was a warm 21° C in Dehli the day I left.  But while I don’t rejoice at the snow, panda Bao Bao, a sixteen-month old at the National Zoo, had a high old time playing in it. Check out this one-minute video and then tell me that animals don’t have fun, and fun in a way that isn’t just practicing for adult skills.

By Thursday the regular program will have resumed.

  1. I saw video of this mom with her 1st cub. She would grab him and they’d roll down a snow covered slope together. He’d get away and climb back up the slope. She’d follow him and the game would start again. I concluded these pandas love the snow and go nuts in it. I’ve seen this mom play much harder, but she knows how not to hurt her cub.

  2. It’s cold but after last year’s winter, I just don’t care. It sucks to come from a warm place into it though. I remember my misery at returning from Hawaii one winter. I complained as soon as I was at Honolulu airport, enviously looking at people deplaning from cold climes and shedding their evil winter gear. I whined that I didn’t want to go back. It was too cold, etc. etc.

    1. We have just had the warmest year on record globally! 🙁 I LOVE snow – I am so jealous…. This bloody country (Big Britain) is too bloody warm.

      1. You would become disillusioned after you spent every early morning digging out your driveway (often to have a snow plough push all the snow back in as it cleans the streets), spending 20 minutes cleaning off your car coming out of work and then took your life into your hands driving to/from home each morning, not to mention frozen pipes and broken water pipes or storms that knock out electricity.

          1. I see that it has warmed up outside. It is now up to 6°F.

So, yes, now would be a bad time for that gloating.

          2. It’s sixty there? That’s warmer than here! We’ve only just barely cleared fifty so far today — but, of course, it’s only 9:30 local time.

          3. Surely you know the difference between 0 and °. And, yes, I’m calling you “Shirley”.

          4. Nah it’s ok. I will just mention our nice 80 degree F temps when yous (trying to make “yous” main stream) are suffering with 100 F temps in the summer. 🙂

          5. Oh, wes don’t suffer with 100°F temperatures. That’s pleasant summer weather!

No, wes suffer with 115°F+ temperatures and overnight lows in the 90s….

Hey, ‘having fun’ IS an adult skill.

  4. Thanks, for the video link. Silly humans that believe they are more important/ specials than any other life?

  5. Send us a bit of your cold, please. We’ve already had temperature up to 44C, only heading for 38 C today with a huge bushfire to the northeast of Adelaide that’s into its sixth day. Some 500 fire fighters, a large proportion of them volunteers fighting it.

  6. Welcome home. It is similarly very cold now in Michigan, despite the late start of this winter.

  7. Jerry, You need to be made aware of this if you’re not already. When I got forced out of Calvin College for publishing an article in which I argued that evolution ruled out a ruinous historical Fall this man helped the college with that cause. Google my case if you are not aware of it. I assume you are. Read his comments on that subject in this pathetic piece. Someone needs to expose BioLogos for the morally and intellectually bankrupt organization that it is. This is insufferable:

    1. Apparently Biologos is “very much a ‘safe place’ venue” for wrestling with only some things. Mouw can say how “tough it’s been for people in academic leadership from personal experience.” And so can you.

    2. John, if you think he is a hypocrite, go to the BioLogos website and explain the issue in the comments section of that post. Why ask someone else to do it? You know the story better than anyone.

    3. “Someone needs to expose BioLogos for the morally and intellectually bankrupt organization that it is. ”

      Jerry has done so repeatedly.

  8. Bloody cold bet it is.When i watch English Dramas they say Bloody Hell.I say it and it never sounds right coming from an American, but writing it is the same.Welcome back.

    1. I remember once it was really cold one January – -20 plus wind chill. I heard people swearing on the street walking in it.
