Today’s footie (and a mini-contest)

June 24, 2014 • 4:25 am

For the foreseeable future all the games seem to be starting no later than 3 p.m., which is a disaster for Professor Ceiling Cat.  There’s a couple of good games today, including Italy vs. Uruguay. . . Here’s today’s schedule.

But let’s liven things up: guess the winners and the scores of all four games. Deadline is 11 a.m. Chicago time (3.5 hours from now), when the first games start. The first person to win gets a Jerry Coyne the Cat keychain, emblazoned with my eponymous felid getting a belly rub. If nobody gets them all right (and nobody will), the person who comes closest will win using the judge’s yet-to-be-determined algorithm. If nobody even predicts all four winners, everyone’s a loser. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON, PLEASE!

Sadly, I watched no games yesterday. 🙂  But here are some highlights (as usual, the videos are poor); as reader pktom64 noted in a comment, the highlights of all games played are archived, in high quality, at TSM Plug.

Spain crushed Australia, 3-0:

Netherlands 2, Chile 0 (am I wrong, or there are an inordinate number of goals scored by headers):

Brazil 4, Cameroon 1

Mexico 3, Croatia 1. One lovely goal by Mexico, and another from a double header

To top it off, the Google Doodle (now changed every game) is boring this morning (click to see the lame animation):

  1. Costa Rica 2 – 1 England

    Italy 1 – 0 Uruguay

    Greece 0 – 2 Côte d’Ivoire

    Japan 0 – 3 Columbia

This WC has a lot of goals ; I think Neymar scored the 100th goal of the competition yesterday, for the 100th game in the finals for Brasil.

Once again, I’m not affiliated with the website, but here the highlights are great!

    1. Also note that yesterday The Dutch team had no ‘van’ in for the first time in 221 internationals! 🙂

        1. That is highly irrational of Klinsmann. I hope he is just lying.
I read about the “Disgrace of Gijón” in 1982. I have no problem with a pact USA-Germany. Just think about the injuries that would be prevented. One US player already got a broken nose.

    1. Yes, thanks, but I’m on a book deadline and can’t spare 90 minutes during the day. If I put on a game on my laptop and then put it behind me, and turn the sound down, I still can’t work!

      1. That sounds worse (more distracting) than having it playing on a big screen right in front of you.

          1. With me it depends on the character of the noise and my state of mind. Sometimes the slightest noise will piss me off, sometimes a tornado would not distract me. Also depends on the work I am doing.

Thanks! For several decades, I never paid any attention to football, and now I’m hooked.

  15. Costa Rica 1 – 2 England

    Italy 2 – 1 Uruguay

    Greece 1 – 3 Côte d’Ivoire

    Japan 1 – 2 Columbia

  16. Costa Rica 0 – 3 Englang
    Grece 1 – 1 Cote d’Ivoire
    Itay 2 – 1 Uruguay
    Japan 1 – 2 Colombia

  17. The probability of getting this right is staggering low, but let’s do it just for fun sake.
    Costa Rica 0 England 2
    Italy 1 Uruguay 1
    Greece 1 Cote D’ivoire 3
    Japan 2 Colombia 2

  18. Yes, there are an inordinate number of goals from headers, from long balls and from defensive mistakes. Also, by modern standards, lots of players caught offside.

In many ways the tournament feels like a throwback to the eighties, both in (entertaining) style and (low) quality of play.

Costa Rica, Uruguay, Ivory Coast and Colombia all to win 3-0.

  19. To me, Costa Rica is the biggest surprise so far (maybe tied with Spain laying an egg, probably from predictable exhaustion). Of course there have been other surprises like the way the Netherlands looks so far, and even the play of the US for that matter, who should advance if they don’t totally collapse against Germany.

  20. Sorry predictions:

    Costa Rica 2 England 1
    Italy 1 Uruguay 0
    Cote D’ivoire 2 Greece 0
    Columbia 3 Japan 0

Bet against this, you’ll probably do great with my luck.

    1. @Gravityfly

He did it twice before already and each time got about 10 games ban. I’m guessing this time it is going to be very serious.
