Reader and artist Kelly Houle called my attention to a short but hilarious video of a cat going nuts while watching the live stream from a Cornell Lab Bird Cam on a flat-screen t.v. I’ve put a screenshot below, but to see the video, complete with frustrated paw-strikes and meows, go over to the original Flickr site.
Is this torture, or amusement?

Why can’t it be both? Most of us in the arts are familiar with the blending of the two….

Agreed. I was thinking the same thing.
Certainly Aquinas would say it’s a false dichotomy.
My cat does the same thing when I’m playing video games!

My cats stalk birds on the back lawn, their failure rate must be greater than 99% but they keep doing it! While they have enormous patience and tenacity for the stalk, evolution has provided them with very phlegmatic natures when it comes to failure. They just pretend it never happened and move on.
My dog was watching a documentary which showed a wolf burying some of its catch in the snow.
He then went looking under the television to find where it had gone.
My dog used to run up to the TV whenever there were horses or dogs on it. You could see how she’d get confused when she got up close & they weren’t really visible anymore but from far back you could see the whole horse or dog.
My TV often had nose prints & lick marks.
Yeah dogs and horses are his main interests, but pretty much any large quadruped will get his attention, particularly if there are vocal effects.
Arctic / snow-country nature documentaries can be quite effective baby-sitting tools.
My male tuxedo cat watches the HDTV and tries to catch images on the screen. The HD picture must have sufficient depth that it fools him into thinking the images are real.
I don’t think it’s either: I think it’s just what a moggy DOES. It’s ACTIVITY. 🙂
Cat business. Very serious stuff.
That cat needs help from Moe the Crow! Moe would show her it was all pretend.
We had a cat in the ’60s who tried to catch bowling balls on TV.
My cat was absolutely tortured by the “cat games” on the iPad. I had to stop showing them to her, poor thing. I feel the same way about the laser pointer. They seem to get over it quickly enough when you give them their noms.
Reminds of the Monty Python sketch…
Your cat in a rut?
Call Confuse-a-cat.
This is great. However, can ceiling c*t explain this horrific incident?
