!!Important poll!!

April 10, 2012 • 6:18 pm

You know I wouldn’t ask you to crash a poll unless something truly important was at stake. There are enough readers here, I think, to influence this poll at Pajiba, which was clearly created by a wrong-thinking person:

Why are some people dog people, and some people cat people, and why are those two constituencies so hostile toward baby people?

I don’t understand these phenomena, myself. Personally, I am anti-cute puppy and adorable kitten, and I believe that devoting even a fraction of our unlimited Internet space to these two subjects is antithetical to good taste. I think it’s dopey. I currently write for a site that I love despite the fact that Corgi Fridays is a popular weekly feature, and where a post comparing dogs to “Mad Men” characters was one of the most popular of last week. I respect it, but I don’t get it. But show me an adorable baby, and I will awww with the best of them.

You know what to do. Vote here.  If cats win by noon tomorrow, I’ll give away an autographed copy of WEIT to any  an autographed copy of WEIT to one randomly-selected reader who says he/she has voted for kittehs in the comments below.  Be honest!  Just give your handle and say that you voted for teh kittehs.

Thank God Ceiling Cat they didn’t include squids. . . .

UPDATE: Oh dear, I meant ONE autographed copy to a randomly selected reader among those who votes for cats. I have only a dozen paperbacks left!  Apologies for the misunderstanding.

  1. Of course I voted for kittens. Human babies – yawn. Puppies – okay. Kittens – ootsie cutesie. But any grown cat beats all of the rest because they have the fully developed personality.

  2. I already have a charmingly autographed copy of WEIT. So I let Merlyn vote in my stead. Guess what he chose…

  3. Yay hey! I think we’ve pharyng…. swamped them.

The first pic there reminded me just how ugly babies and dogs can look. But then they managed to find a rather ugly pic of a (very young) kitteh, too, which I would have thought was impossible.

Anyway, I voted as requested, kan i haz WEIT? 😉

  4. Voted for kittehs!!!11! Had there been an option for pictures of kittens eating babies, I might have gone another way.

  5. Wow…this poll has already been successfully pharyng…er, “Coyned”? What do we call it here when Dr. Coyne rallies the readers for a poll-jacking?

I voted my conscience, and would not be bought by promises of great scientific literature. I like all of ’em; babehs, kittehs, and doggehs. And I dislike that I am severely allergic to kittehs.

  6. I voted for the kittehs, but I only did it for the fabulous prizes. So I also voted for babies. I can has book anyway?

  7. I don’t usually post much anywhere but the chance of winning this forces my hand.

I voted for the kittehs too!

  8. Some of the commenters there are getting suspicious:

“What happened here?!? Puppies were winning! And now kittens are dominating? Did Cat Fancy send a contingent of its readers over here to swamp the poll?”

  9. I voted for babies and puppies. NOT. Granted I *prefer* adult cats, but the poll listed young’uns and said “which of these do you prefer” so of course I said kittens. Who would vote otherwise? They don’t droll, crap on themselves or bark. Kittens win, hands down.

  10. “Drool”. Although cats aren’t droll either, they are too straightforward for that.

    Kittehs up to 46 percent!

  11. Voted for the kittens, but only because WEIT is on my “to read” list. Me, I prefer Hubble wallpapers…

  12. I voted for adorable kittens. So far kittens are in the lead at 46%. I want to read your book Jerry

  13. I voted for kittens, but only because WEIT is on my “to read” list. Me, I prefer Hubble wallpapers…

  14. Hehehe… the cat’s in the bag. Voted Kittehz.

  15. Squeaking in another kitteh vote just before noon Central time. Hoodie kitten clearly proves that hoodies are not inherently threatening.

  16. Of course I voted for kittehs. Who in his right mind would be interested in pics of babies or dogs?

  17. I voted three times, once each from three different browsers. The poll stayed at 46 percent kittehs, but there are over 2,000 votes, so far, so it looks like we’re winning!

    1. By the way, that’s one vote for my three shorthaired black cats, one vote for my three tuxedo cats, and one vote for my miscellaneous four cats (tabby, tortie, longhaired black and gray/white).

    1. Hate the owners. They’re the ones in charge. It’s not as though a 10 pound animal is going to overpower them if the do the right thing and decide to keep the cats inside.

      1. …or use a collar. locking the cat up isn’t fair, and hating animals for being predators is irrational.

        1. You mean harness-walk them, right? A cat should never have a collar around its neck, they don’t have proper muscles there and will snap their necks trying to escape. Cats should also never be tied up outside. A catproof mesh fence is fine but not easy to do.

  18. Voted for kittens! Still 20% ahead of the mutts. Just finished reading The Greatest Show on Earth, so please rush me my copy of WEIT.

  19. voted, and who would be so foolish as to vote for the cuteness of a non-ambulatory pre-adult?

  20. I don’t often vote in online polls, but an autographed copy of WEIT was just too tempting. So, I voted for kittehs.

  21. I personally did not vote. My two cats, Stimpy (a Manx with no tail, hence her name) and Squiggy, however, did vote…for cats.

  22. Oops. Ignore the email address submitted with my above post. I don’t use that one anymore. If I get picked, use the email address attached to this post.

    (I voted for cats)

  23. Count another vote for kittehs. I have two Siamese next to me and they are quite vocal. Must be snack time.

  24. Definitely cats. Otters (significant or otherwise as well as other mustelids) are also fine but that wasn’t an option in this poll.

  25. I voted for kittens. I might have voted for babies if it meant MY kids but other people’s kids hold no interest. And I would never, ever vote for dogs.

  26. I voted for the kittehs, while my cat stood close by, tapping his claw on the edge of my desk as if daring me to pick puppies. That’s the last time I agree to an election monitor when I vote on the interwebz.

  27. My vote is for sale. I’d never vote for dogs or puppies – human babies, well, maybe – kittens, sure, I’d vote for kittens if there was something in it for me. And since there is something in it – even if just a random chance of winning WEIT – then that’s how I voted. Kittens it is!

  28. I already have the book and I hope to get your signature when you come to my fair city on May 2, but of course I still
    VOTED FOR KITTENS!

  29. vote for teh kittehs, but ONLY because they didn’t include adorable pictures of turtles. which probably counts agains me getting a free book, but at least I still have my honor!

  30. I think it was rather unethical to skew the data like this but I’ll do anything for the chance of a free book. How’s that for free-thinking?
