Free evolution DVD

February 8, 2012 • 5:48 pm

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is giving away a free DVD of its 2011 Holiday Lectures, which this year were on “Bones, stones and genes: the origin of modern humans.” The lecturers are good, solid scientists: John Shea, Sara Tischkoff, and Tim White.

You can get the DVD, available in April, by filling in a form beginning here (“click to order”), although it’s also available as a free video podcast at the same site. (I haven’t watched the talks.)  There’s no down side to this one, for the HHMI is a highly reputable organization.

  1. I love them too. The DVDs and HHMI magazine are always welcome at my house. I even sent the Ken Miller DVD to some relatives.

    1. Toto Olivera’s lectures from 2009 have some of the basic elements of protein evolution in them, besides just being excellent talks, particularly considering how his work on the cone snail toxins started.

  2. Thanks for the post Jerry! Any notice on further free educational DVDs (especially in science) is also greatly welcomed.

  3. There is also an awesome lecture by Sean Carroll on their website, I highly recommend it – even though prof.coyne might disagree with some of its content- :P.

  4. Thank you Jerry. Very interesting. Anyone outside North America will run into a slight problem ~ I tried to order 6 x DVD for delivery to the UK & I got this message at the Checkout:

“If you are outside North America, videotapes are not available, and DVDs and CD-ROMs can be ordered only by written request”

I will ask a U.S. friend to order & ship on to me.

I’m especially interested in this one: Evolution: Fossils, Genes, and Mousetraps
“Leading evolution educator Ken Miller discusses the controversy surrounding the teaching of evolution, presents compelling evidence for evolution and reasons why “intelligent design” is not scientific. The presentation also features Dr. Miller’s responses to questions from a live audience of high school students.

This DVD includes detailed chapter search by scientific topic; beautiful explanatory graphics; and English subtitles.

Presented at HHMI September 2006. One disc, lecture time approx. 90 min”

    1. FURTHER INFO FOR NON-NORTH AMERICANS:

“Your letter should include the item(s) you would like to order and your name, title, occupation, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, and fax number. If your request is approved, you will receive an e-mail confirmation.

Please e-mail your letter to: webmaster@hhmi.org

  5. they dont ship to australia either. I was wondering if they will consider setting up agencies in other countries to distribute out these medias. if that is the case, i will put my hands up for asia-pacific region.

    1. HHMI does ship our educational resources to Australia and Sri Lanka, and most other countries. The mechanism for ordering outside of North America is to send an email request to the webmaster.

If you are requesting multiple copies, please include information about how you plan to use the resources (ex: classroom instruction, homework, name of school, course, level of students, etc.) This will help expedite your request.
