No readers’ wildlife today.

April 6, 2024 • 8:15 am

I have about three or four days’ worth of readers’ wildlife photos, but am going to dole them out every other day or so in the hopes that readers will step up and contribute. We shall, of course, have John Avise’s Sunday bird photos tomorrow, but I implore readers with good photos to sent them in.  We have never been so low before, and it’s worrisome. On the other hand, perhaps people don’t care if this feature remains, and in that case, I’ll let it taper off to the occasional post.

Truth be told, the world is quite depressing these days, with at least two wars in which one side is moral and the other immoral, the threat of Trump’s re-election looming, and, to top it all off, the Sun is going away on Monday. As le chien noir is here, posting may be light for a while

Please discuss what you want today: the wars, predictions about November’s election, or whatever.

  1. Trust me, your thousands of readers care a great deal about this feature.
High on my priority list is to see if I can put something together worthy of your attention.

  2. Greetings Jerry, I have tons of photos, just not enough time to get them processed to send them through, will get some to you after the 15th.

Re: Trump V Biden. No matter who is elected, America will survive. The derangement syndrome on both sides must be tempered. We have evidence of how each governed. Trump’s affect is much “worse” than Biden’s; his policies are not.

      1. We (I) was told by the same people, prior to 2016, that “our democracy will be over” if Trump won.

        Didn’t happen.

One could argue that the nation is less secure with the wide-open border under Biden and hundreds of thousands of Americans dying of Fentanyl.

Both these candidates are far less than ideal. Still, I think we’ll survive.

  3. How is the Botany Bond Restoration going? Surely something would be going on right about now. Is there a posted timeline?

Is there any tactic readers can do support the project to the University, in ways that will not endanger our host’s situation?

    BRING BACK BOTANY POND!

    1. Occasionally there are workmen there, but it’s pretty clear that it will not be filled with water by covocation (early July). We’re now two years without ducks, and I’m wondering if we’ll even have three.

People are pretty upset that the pond isn’t near restored, and that will put a crimp in graduation, because people like to have their pictures taken by the pond. The people in charge, I submit, are not kicking enough butt to get it done.

  4. I feel confident that many readers are like me; I am a terrible photographer and don’t have any material appropriate. Plus i can’t afford good equipment. For many reasons people, like me, can’t send in photos. I feel your lack of supply is not due to lack of interest, but if you don’t have material, what are going to do? Maybe not a daily feature, but many regular readers of WEIT, like me, would miss it dearly if Reader Wildlife is discontinued.

    Best to you

    1. Agree with everything said above. Why Evolution Is True is my link to everything going on in the world—breaking news, international focus, thoughtful articles, and moderated discussions by smart people. And comments and links always worth following.

I do love all the Readers Wildlife submissions from regulars and newcomers, but I can’t give them nearly the attention that I’d like, and, as my comments really are limited mostly to the wow! that amazing! why is that bird/insect/whatever doing that? It’s also very kind that most everyone will answer specific questions.

Additionally, though retired, most of my volunteer work is also done on the computer, and my eyes increasingly can’t take all the screen time. But definitely not due to lack of interest.

  5. I don’t have any pictures worthy of note; otherwise I would contribute. But I do enjoy the work of others and appreciate what they do to help make this feature a success. Please keep it going if you can.

  6. Scene from Annie Hall. Alvy, aged 9, along his mother is at the doctor’s office:

Doctor: Why are you depressed, Alvy?
Alvy’s Mom: Tell Dr. Flicker. It’s something he read.
    Doctor: Something he read, huh?
    Alvy: The universe is expanding.
    Doctor: The universe is expanding?
Alvy: Well, the universe is everything, and if it’s expanding, someday it will break apart and that would be the end of everything.
Alvy’s Mom: What is that your business? He stopped doing his homework!
    Alvy: What’s the point?
Alvy’s Mom: What has the universe got to do with it? You’re here in Brooklyn! Brooklyn is not expanding!
Doctor: It won’t be expanding for billions of years yet, Alvy. And we’ve gotta try to enjoy ourselves while we’re here!

  7. Nick Cohen’s Substack newsletter ‘Writing from London’ had a good memo yesterday, ‘Sickness, Wokeness and the Limits of Language Policing’ :

“We live in a time when ‘narratives’ are accorded extraordinary power. The legacy of Foucault and Edward Said is a focus on matters that previous generations of radicals would have considered too trivial to consider. As a result, in all developed democracies, activists expend vast amounts of energy trying to change the way people speak. The belief that if you can change language you can change the world has obvious appeal to a liberal-left dominated by university graduates. Arguing about language is, after all, what humanities courses teach you to do.”

And presumably, what law courses teach one to do.

  8. Please continue the feature, if not daily then at an interval that can be supported by the average level of contributions.
