It’s World Frog Day! Give some love to our slimy green friends! World Frog Day celebrates all anurans, so toads are included. Here’s a nice big American Toad (Bufo americanus) from Will County, Illinois.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (aka the Bronx Zoo) is celebrating with fascinating frogs and a fine gallery of frog photos; you can also contribute to frog conservation. And don’t forget to celebrate Coyne’s Harlequin Toad (Atelopus coynei) here and here!

JAC: and HERE!. What a beaut!

  1. Awesome – I remember digging in the dirt as a kid, and my shovel started scraping on something which produced a sound unlike scraped dirt. Then I saw an eye peek out from the debris – what an amazing find!

The toad was ok, I let her go. Here’s to you, little toad in the dirt I found as a kid.

  2. What a great day! Glad to hear about celebrating frogs and toads. That American Toad is a solid toad. Reminds me of a bulldog.
The array of colors and shapes of the frogs on the gallery of photos is gorgeous.
The Atelopus coynei is a nice looking toad! Beautiful pattern and a great green color. Congratulations on having this toad named after you.

  3. I love frogs! I used to catch, collect, and enjoy them when I was a kid in upstate NY. American Toads, Bullfrogs, Leopard Frogs, Green Frogs. I love them all. Did I say Toads? They are my all-time favorite.

Happy World Frog Day to all frogs and to all humans who love them!

    1. Yes! My brother and I used to catch bullfrogs from the pond near our house growing up. Frogs and toads rock! (And croak, ha ha)

  4. A bit early in the season to be celebrating frogs, but sure!

Maybe this summer I could offer a “readers’ wildlife recordings” submission.

    1. In Will County, Illinois (one county south of Chicago), the chorus frogs are already calling and breeding. In Kenosha County, Wisconsin (two counties north of Chicago), I haven’t heard the chorus frogs yet, but calling has been reliably reported to me.

  5. I was mowing the lawn yesterday for the first time of the season, and saw a tree frog hopping around. First frog I’ve seen this season (though I’ve heard many). An apt find for 3/20!
