A tear-jerking Christmas video

December 15, 2020 • 1:30 pm

This is one of the videos that’s a litmus test about whether you have a heart of stone or of oatmeal. If you tear up, you’re okay. (I sure did!) It’s a bit hard to understand at first, but all comes clear at the end. Yes, it’s an ad made by a Dutch pharmaceutical company, but the sponsorship doesn’t detract from its poignancy.

A bit of backstory from Today:

new commercial from the Dutch mail-order pharmacy Doc Morris has left the internet in tears by showing the reason behind a grandfather’s drive to get in shape for Christmas with his family. . . . The spot [was] created by the German ad agency Jung von Matt

  1. I had just watched the holiday episode of a show where a woman asks the father of her baby to marry her and he said yes. I was already emotional.

  2. Very nice and moving.

I didn’t think the company was Dutch because it is a German commercial, but they are Dutch. Not that it matters, but I just wondered.

    1. Yes, the older I get the more sentimental I seem to get. (And I’m a year older today, as it happens…)

      1. A year older and a bit more sentimental. Cheers! Sounds like improvement to me. Happy Birthday…a wee late now.

  3. A little bit of cynicism, if you watched it without the music it wouldn’t have quite the impact. Music has great power to evoke emotions, and advertisers know that all too well.

    1. I’m not sure what your point is. The finale of Beethoven’s Ninth wouldn’t be near as moving without the words. It’s the whole package that works, not just the visuals. And it’s the whole packages that induces tears.

    2. I was music-free and and to me it appeared to be actors in the act of acting. With music, it probably would have seemed like actors acting with music added later.

    1. Neither did I, and I’m sure I don’t have heart made of oatmeal.
Over the top sentimentalism, more like.

    1. I’m guessing the volume of the weight was about 5 L. Assuming steel – density of about 7 kg/L … that’s 35 kg. So I would estimate the weight had 10 kg on the girl.

  4. I got only a little “verklempt”. But no doubt that was in part b/c I was fore-warned as to what was coming.
Its still hard to get thru certain shows. The original How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for example. Several of the Pixar movies…

  5. I’m not crying; you all are the ones who are crying. I’ve just got something in my eye.

But then, I’ve always had a soft spot for any retelling of the Milo of Croton tale. 🙂

  6. Interesting …
Watched with interest. Saw the child, guessed she was the objective of the weight lifting exercise. She was picked up … not a problem.

The mirror neurons kicked in at the mother’s reaction.

  8. Great, unfortunately my reactions to Facebook have been blocked .. The reasons are probably of a metaphysical nature .. 😉
