Dobrzyn: Tuesday and Wednesday

September 6, 2017 • 1:15 pm

The weather in Dobrzyn continues to be chilly, drizzly, and overcast, so the order of the day is eating, working, and cuddling with Hili. Malgorzata, however, abided by her promise to keep the cherry pies replenished, and so we had a new one, this time baked with a delicious almond crust:

Dinner last night was genuine Swedish meatloaf with potatoes, broccoli, and, of course, a cold Zubr:

Tonight’s dinner: homemade vegetable and sausage soup prepared with a soft local cheese. We added a bit of heavy cream to the soup and had bread and hard cheese on the side (along with the ubiquitous Zubr). No carbs!

Hili and Cyrus engaged in illicit cuddling:

Hili sitting on her canisters. When she was a kitten she could fit on just one; now, at four years old, she needs at least two:

And Hili beside me on the couch just now:

Bonus video: Hili gets fusses!

  1. Question to Jerry (or anyone else who wants to answer):

I noticed what looks like bottle of beer in the delicious-looking noms photos. Given you (Jerry) have been posting about being sick I’m wondering:

Do you still drink, e.g. beer, when you are sick? With a cold for instance?

I personally hate, hate being sick and never want to prolong it. But I also love dining out and having a drink. So when I get ill e.g. with a cold I always stress about drinking alcohol in terms of lowering my immune system and prolonging my sickness.
Whereas I know people who never let being sick get in the way of drinking alcohol (and don’t suffer for it as far as I know).

The same goes for having a drink on a night out if I’ve even taken an Aleve for a headache earlier in the day. I’m they guy who actually reads all the warnings and becomes paranoid about ever letting alcohol come within reach of a pain reliever in my system – whereas I have a friend who practically lived on pain killers due to a bad hip and he drank freely with no issues ever.

I’m curious how Jerry and others navigate these things…

(Jerry, I hope you are feeling better soon!)

    1. I’m not that sick; just a cold and sore throat, both of which are getting better. It’s only a half bottle of Zubr per day. And when I’m really sick, yes, I lose any desire for alcohol.

    2. In my experience drinking and being sick definitely don’t go together. A cold, at least a minor one, has never posed an issue but something more serious and drinking will have me feeling worse quickly. I think the main reason for the immediate (hours to next morning) ill effects is dehydration. That is bad enough when you aren’t already ill but it exasperates the illness and raises the misery by an order of magnitude.

I don’t know how serious the risks actually are but I’ve never worried about drinking after taking ibuprofen. It isn’t something that happens often. I suspect that doing so isn’t likely to cause an issue unless you are predisposed to having an issue or are drinking and taking pain meds regularly and or in high dosages. But I could just be an idiot regarding this.

    3. My high school biology teacher suggested that a cure for a cold was; 1) hang your hat on the end of the bed, 2) drink scotch until you could see two hats, 3) sleep it off. He estimated that by the time the hangover wore off you’d be cured. (A more relaxed time and place)

I don’t see any point in drinking good wine or good scotch when you can’t taste properly. Beyond that, I navigate to the beer fridge with or without minor infections or otc painkillers.

    4. I gauge my level of illness on this scale:
level 1: no desire for alcohol
level 2: no desire for coffee
level 3: call an ambulance and/or hearse.

    5. My Irish family here in America fed child me the Irish Remedy: hot water with lemon juice, honey and whiskey. One of those before bed and I slept like a rock.

    6. I wouldn’t get drunk, but I don’t think a drink or two will have any significant effect on the course of a typical upper respiratory infection. Mixing alcohol and Aleve or Advil is mostly dangerous for your stomach (too much can give you bad heartburn or even an ulcer), and is unlikely to cause trouble if there’s food mixed in with the drink. Mixing alcohol with Tylenol can be bad for your liver, but not in small quantities.

Also, Jerry, there’s carbs in tonight’s dinner. Mostly the bread, but not only the bread.

    7. Much obliged for all the answers.

I remember one time drinking while I had a cold and it made me feel far worse not long after. Another time it seemed fine. Never sure which way to go so I usually avoid alcohol when sick in any way.

    8. When I have a cold I will sometimes put a little gin in my hot lemon (sliced lemon and honey in hot water) before bedtime. Helps me sleep … yeah, that’s it.

  2. Yer killin’ me with those flicks of pie, Jerry! Yum! If my eyes could taste pie I’d be in heaven.

Hope you’re having as much fun as Hili.

      1. I just looked into this. I don’t think that’s an actual scientific type of response. To clarify, I got the chills reading about the soup. I’m not familiar with biological research on the chills. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Those Pies look scrumptious, along with the rest of the Food,if I were you, I’d move in upstairs.lol
