Matthew Cobb found this “spot the salamander” tweet (it’s a hellbender, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), and I had a hard time with it. Can you spot it? I’ll put the answer below the fold (click on “read more”):
Look closely—1 of these rocks is actually a salamander. More on giant (& harmless) hellbenders: https://t.co/mxSuwUiwlA 📸David Herasimtschuk pic.twitter.com/ooIYuBCysE

See the eye?

I don’t know.
The “rock” to the right in the middle looks more like a salamander. I think I can make out eyes on each side of the head and indentations that look too coincidentally symmetric.
I’ve fixed it. I hadn’t had my coffee when I looked. 🙂
I don’t think that red line is in the right place.
Yeah, I think you’re right. I’ll fix it.

A much better red line!
Hmmm. I’d picked the one with two eyes just to the right of the red circle.
You are RIGHT. See new photo.
Neat article though. I have to confess that if I were to encounter one of these while in a creek, I would probably wet myself, 56 degree water or no.
This is the first one I got right away.
That’s simply amazingly adapted. The rust color in the rock could be iron oxide or other minerals or some kind of algae. I wonder if part of her secret of concealment is that the same algae growing on the rocks is growing on the animal’s skin? If not, she’s evolved her wardrobe to be perfectly matched.
I got it straight away when i embiggen it ,the eye is a dead giveaway .
