Jesus ‘n’ Mo ‘n’ morals

The “new” Jesus and Mo strip, called “spin,” is actually a resurrection from 2008, as the author is, as they say, “on hols”. Since this site began in 2009, I won’t have posted it before. In the intervening years, of course, “retard” has become a word one shouldn’t use.

  1. I think the use of “retarding” is correct in this case. It is being used to mean hold back. This seems to me to be very different than referring to an individual.

    1. Yes. The joke is the misunderstanding by the two gentlemen in the strip. That they think and express themselves in such terms is part of the moral failing indicated.

    1. I’ve made sure that all my soft furnishings are coated with flame-special educational needs as well. Cant be to careful!

    1. Oh, my. That’s excellent!

Reminds me of the meme I’ve seen: He could have prohibited either shellfish or slavery. He chose shellfish.

Retard has always been a word one shouldn’t use. (I used it in the playground back in the day, and others used it against me. That doesn’t justify it.)

OTOH, as BobTerrace says in 1, the barmaid used retarding correctly.

    1. I agree. It’s never been an acceptable word, the barmaid used it correctly, and it’s typical of the religious to try and twist ut to her calling them nanes.

      1. I disagree. There was a time when the word “retarded” was an official term for “person with learning difficulties”. Of course children pick up on these things and they become a playground insult. Another one I remember from my youth is “spastic”, once a perfectly acceptable term for a certain disability, now more or less taboo because people pick up on it and use it as an insult.

The fundamental problem isn’t the words but the concept of using a disability as an insult.

        1. I remember spastic being a normal term, and now that you’ve reminded me, retarded was a normal word when I was a kid too. So I stand corrected.

        2. “Retarded” hasn’t completely fallen out of use. I just sent in my membership renewal to Voice Of The Retarded.
