Thursday: Hili dialogue

Good morning: it’s May 18, 2017, and it’s National Cheese Souffle day, promulgated by Big Cheese, as well as International Museum Day. Summer is coming, with temperatures in Chicago above 80° F (27° C) the past few days. But I’m warned by Ken the Weather Man that there may be severe weather in Chicago today, with high winds, hail, and perhaps some tornado cells.

On this day in 1652, Rhode Island passed the first law in English-speaking North America making slavery illegal. On May 18, 1860, Abe Lincoln received the Republican nomination for the Presidency; let us not forget that Republicans were once sane.

Not much else happened on this day, and that goes for births and deaths, too. Notables born on this day include Bertrand Russell (1872), Walter Gropius (1883), Perry Como (1912) and Tina Fey (1970). Those who died on this day include Gustav Mahler (1911) and William Saroyan (1981).

Perry Como is underrated; here’s his version of one of my very favorite American standards. The synch of voice and lips are is a bit wonky, but this is indeed a live performance:

I don’t know if you’ve seen the video of Turkish President Recep Erdogan’s bodyguards brutally attacking demonstrators in Washington yesterday, but they were horrific, with Erdogan’s thugs kicking people in the face when they were already down on the ground:

Erdogan is a fascist goon, and so are his minions.

  1. Oh yes, “Without A Song” – my favorite vocal version is with ‘Ol Blue Eyes and Red Norvo’s orchestra on “Sinatra Live in Paris”. <— 80% certain of title off top of my head.

  2. I have a pair of ravens that lives in the trees on the east end of my barn. The equine stalls are also on that end of the barn.

    Each year when they are renewing their nest, they gather my donkey’s undercoat, right off the donkey’s back, to reline their nest. It’s a larger version of the above pair. The donkey looks really weird with a raven on his back. L

  3. Staying with that theme of weather forecasting, here in central Kansas we are in for some extreme weather later today and tomorrow. Yesterday it was slightly west of here with one pretty good tornado and lots of hail but today it is on us.

    Perry Como was a great singer. Use to watch his TV show all the time as a kid.

    3. I find several videos on Youtube of almost identical situations — tiny birds plucking fur from sleeping yellow Labradors. The birds all look the same, and so the dogs (who probably enjoy the attention), but the backgrounds are different.   6. My mom loved Perry Como, and I’ve grown to appreciate him. I particular like his “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now”. His Christmas stuff is great, too. I’ve always thought, though, that he was badly guided in many of his song choices in the 50s, like the abysmal “Hot Diggity Dog Diggity.” Sinatra, along with a terrific voice, also had a knack for picking better music in the same period.

    There’s are articles in the Washington Post and others arguing that Erdogan’s security detail might not have diplomatic immunity, which would be nice.

  8. Perhaps Erdogan will have to substitute some of his bodyguards for the next year or two. Police officers may have been manhandled in the fray. No arrests?

  9. Wait. What? A dictator comes to Washington (at Trump’s invite) and brings thugs with him, who beat up peaceful protesters? And “manhandle” the police? In the US?

    In his podcast last night, Mike Malloy said “Why isn’t this front page news?” This asshole, Erdogan, should never be invited back in the US or any other civilized country, for that matter. And, according to Malloy, this isn’t the first time this has happened with Erdogan and his ‘guards’.

    What’s next? The dictator of the Philippines is invited by Trump, and his thugs pull out guns and shoot the protesters? Nothing would surprise me anymore.

    Republicans and Democrats both drastically redefined themselves during the (Franklin) Roosevelt years. When the Reps adopted the “Southern strategy” for getting old Dixiecrats to defect to them, they lost all legitimate claim to the title “party of Lincoln”.

  13. That video was amazing. It’s one thing to defend your charge or your own embassy grounds (or similar official location). But aggressively attacking US Citizens (I assume) in the streets of the US?

    Those guys should all be either arrested or deported. (Not holding my breath. Der Drumpfenführer would probably like his minions to behave similarly.)

    I was glad to see the DC Police trying to protect the protestors.

  14. I remember listening to Perry Como in the 1950s. His voice always made me feel like all was right with the world. Which it wasn’t, back then, of course; but it was a nice illusion.
