Philomena promotes Britain but wants to be famous in America

April 29, 2017 • 12:00 pm

Reader Michael, who has contributed to two posts today (see previous one), called my attention to a new series of short videos by Diana Morgan, who has abandoned the persona but not the demeanor of Philomena Cunk. The new series of three clips (one more to come) is called “British Famous“, and attempts to sell Britain as a tourist destination using the conceit that Morgan visits various places in Britain to prepare to be TRULY famous, which means famous not just in Britain, but in America. Here are the first three videos with this introduction:

Who was Benedict Cumberbatch a few years ago? Nobody Cumberbatch, that’s who. Because he was only British Famous. And he’s not alone.

For decades, British celebrities have been adored at home but anonymous abroad, until America discovers them and makes them the real kind of famous.

And that is precisely Diane Morgan’s plan. So she’s doing things she believes Americans love in the hopes of becoming the next big American thing, all while showcasing the greatest parts of Great Britain.

The first video, “The Self-Help Guru”, shows, as Michael noted, Morgan

…taking the piss out of ‘mindfulness’, crystals, chakras etc. . .  Good fun! Not from the T.V. show – Diane seems to have branched out into other stuff such as this YouTube channel, Love GREAT Britain, which is promoting holidays in GB

There are a few other Morgan skits on the channel if you’re interested, but this is the only one that’s reasonably well written IMO.

I didn’t know she has a talent for physical comedy [pratfalls, slapstick] until this series.

Judge for yourself. I prefer Philomena but this is still worth watching:

“The Rock Star”, filmed in Manchester, home of our Matthew Cobb:

And “The action hero,” filmed in Scotland:

The next installment to come is called “The Foodie.”

        1. Exaggerating somewhat? GAC

Was just trying to make a wry observation/dark humor comment in a community that, mostly, loves cats. And would offer some condolences for a recently, suddenly, deceased one.

Maybe I should have shared this in the Caturday trifecta comments. But this was the post that was up as I was waiting for the housecall euthanasia vet to arrive.

          1. I’m confused as to whose kitty died, but my heartfelt condolences in any case. Always so sad🐾🐾

          2. Thanks, Merilee. It was my cat who died. Sorry if I was confusing by combining her death announcement with the Trump comment. I was trying to be clever and snarky, which perhaps wasn’t communicated clearly. I plead grief and sleep deprivation.

Anyway, she’s still here – on ice – and goes to the crematory tomorrow. I should have a frequent flier card with them.

          3. RIP to your poor kitty, Jeannine. I must have been clued out as I missed the Trump joke. Maybe I can also blame my new iPad which organizes my email “threads” in an unfamiliar manner.

  1. Ms. Morgan clearly has a lot to learn about trashing hotel rooms if she wants to make it as a Brit rock star in America. I suggest she study the works of Master-sensei Keith Moon.

  2. So glad someone else shared this (thank you, Michael), because I forgot to. I was watching some old Drunk History clips on YouTube a few weeks ago, and saw the first couple of segments in this series.

Do I understand correctly that Diane Morgan has officially retired Philomena? I hope not, although she does retain the style in these new videos.

I hope she does become American Famous, as I’d love to see more of her.

  3. Hysterically good. Bravo, Diane Morgan! The Philomena character was OK, but this satirical perspective is much better: goodness she is making fun of herself, the UK, and America in one fell swoop. All this via her own self, and not behind a persona.

    1. “she is making fun of herself, the UK, and America in one fell swoop.”

And also all the stereotypical television hype. “In a world… without heroes… one woman… stands tall”. Where do people learn to speak like that? (I mean the voice, not the words.) Sort of like the Terminator on steroids. It’s just so full of BS.

      I think it’s a hilarious spoof.

  4. This sort of spoils Philomena for me: I had assumed that she was just playing an idiot, but it appears she’s always like that.

        1. In fact if you look at the ‘production values’ it’s fairly obvious those were properly produced, scripted commercials. They didn’t just rock up to the location and ad-lib it.

    1. Don’t be silly, Craw. This is her sarcastic way of approaching things, whether as Philomena or herself. An idiot? I don’t think so.
