HuffPo continues spewing bile against Trump

Why do I go after PuffHo? Because it’s a site produced for liberals and progressives, yet it continues to completely demonize Donald Trump. Lest you think I like the man, I despise him and all he stands for, but when a website on OUR side shows an almost hysterical demonization of our opponents, right down to the food they eat, then I get upset. It makes us all look petty.

When I recently wrote about HuffPo’s ridiculous criticisms of Donald Trump preferring well done steak (“AKA the worst way”), several readers thought the HuffPo piece was was a joke. Well, I doubt it, but this is certainly serious. (Click on screenshot to go to article.)

Here’s the whole piece, including the gratuitous inclusion of a tw**t from Trump. Note also the pejorative “gorges on himself” headline. Of course Thanksgiving dinner is all about gorging and food comas, so “gorging” is simply de rigueur. And “on himself”? Really?

Remember, Obama was fond of cheeseburgers! Anyway, let the bile flow:

Even Donald Trump’s Thanksgiving is all about Donald Trump.

The President elect celebrated the holiday true to form by eating two dishes named after himself. According to NBC News, the Trump family’s Thanksgiving menu featured 24 dishes, including a salad dubbed “Mr. Trump’s Wedge Salad” and a dessert called “Three-Layer Trump Chocolate Cake.”

The eponymous salad is an odd choice given Trump’s notoriously unhealthy diet. He’s spoken highly of McDonald’s and KFC, and is often photographed eating fast food. As far as vegetables go, though, a wedge salad―-traditionally topped with bacon and creamy dressing― is one of the least nutritious.

The dinner was held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and included local favorites like Key Lime Pie in addition to traditional holiday foods (no taco bowls, though.)

Meanwhile, President Obama won Thanksgiving by serving pizza bites at the official White House dinner. Yes, pizza bites.

Now that’s just ridiculous. Yes, there were pizza bites at the Obama’s place, but a lot of other stuff as well, as this article from People notes (click on screenshot to go there):

If I had my choice of either of these meals, I’d take Trump’s, mainly for the great seafood appetizers. Thanksgiving dinner isn’t about health, and I’m not a big fan of pizza bites.

Ms. Zell has it right, HuffPo is simply ridden with over-the-top bias, which shows even in articles about his dinner. And I’m not sure that Zell isn’t right that people will tune out if they hear continual carping about stuff like Trump’s meals as opposed to the serious issues: Trump’s policies and his choices for the Cabinet (and what will surely be a dire choice for the Supreme Court).

  1. I’m sorry, but I have a hard time seeing HuffPo as petty to a problematic degree when compared with Obama’s a secret muslim, not a US citizen, and is coming for your guns. I mean if they were only reporting things like this while ignoring the serious problems with Trump fine, but the silly stuff is in addition to the serious. Maybe I’m petty, but I’m happy to see the media mock, and ridicule Trump at every turn, particularly knowing what a thin skin he has, and that this stuff gets under it.

    1. I think it is more than appearing petty. It is fear of desensitizing people to Trump criticism–the boy calling wolf problem. If liberals complain endlessly about Trump trivialities, they will lose effectiveness when they criticize his monstrous actions.

      1. I share the same feeling: what the man has done, and continues to do, in the political realm gives plenty of fodder for earnest, “fact-based” criticism- to continually jump him on trivial matters will result in ALL criticism of him being disregarded as, “trivial”.

      2. You might have a point, but I don’t think your typical Huffpo reader is going to be desensitized to the actual horror of Trump. I think it’s more likely the continuous anti-Trump drumbeat will energize its readers, and never allow a Trump presidency to be normalized.
        Personally I don’t look to HuffPo for news, but when I’m feeling frustrated by the mainstream treating Trump with respect, it’s a nice place to go to for some anti-Trump porn.

        It is mirrored by terms such as ‘racist’ or ‘bigot’ that have been so liberally sprayed all around the place as to have lost virtually all meaning, and can even be seen as a badge of honour.

      Do you prefer that to, say, winning the Presidential election? Because that sort of attitude — I don’t care how smug, irritating, and, indeed, wrong I am as long as I get to insult the other side — is one reason why you lost.

  2. At least the Huffington Post will never be accused of good journalism. That would be a crime in Huff circles where social climbing is the primary concern. Use to be a republican, now a liberal democrat just being the best you can be. She thinks her fans think of it as an internet newspaper and by her standards, maybe she is correct.

    HuffPo is no more on your side than the carny barker is on the mark’s side. Left-leaning news isn’t the product; it’s just the come-on being used to deliver liberal eyeballs to advertisers.

    1. I’m afraid that I have to agree with you about what HuffPost has become. I don’t *think* it was filled with as much rubish click-bait in the past, but it certainly presents itself as little more than that now.

  4. Let’s see. They first say Trump isn’t healthy, then knock him for having salad and commend Obama for having pizza bites. This is reminiscent of right wing sites that tell BLM to shut up and that violence is uncalled for and then complain that peaceful protests are unacceptable too. Should Trump just not eat anything?

    1. I agree. I don’t look at stories like this in Huffington Post. In fact, I rarely read it at all. This HuffPo story is stupid in the extreme.

      I don’t like it that there are people out there on my side of the political divide who like stories that are so petty. I agree with Jerry that we should be focusing on the serious issues.

      One of those serious issues is how Trump will extricate himself from providing too many “jobs for the boys” like the potential ghastliness of Giuliani as Secretary of State. Or the slightly better but still filled with hypocrisy and too hawkish David Petraeus.

      The best thing we can do about HuffPo is just not read it. Every click keeps it going. It needs to be starved to death.

  6. The Huffington Post is much like Salon, another liberal website. Both have a hodgepodge of articles, ranging from the serious to sheer nonsense or the trivial. The discerning reader can gain a lot of important information by reading articles from serious writers. Of course, how many readers are discerning is another question.

        The Huffington Post is the Fox News of liberals. However what irks me the most is that they claim to be liberal but don’t stand up for liberal principles. They praise oppressive ideas like the hijab. They censor free speech by shutting down any criticism. They attack Mr. Trump for being human and eating (because nobody has the right to do that).

        This post is one of the HuffPo’s all-time-lows. Attacking somebody for having dinner on Thanksgiving??!! What next? Will he be attacked for wearing a Santa suit during Christmas, or for distributing gifts?

    2. seems to me Huffpo is a mostly trivial website that preaches to the converted anyway and is not going to change any time soon because its very superficiality (well, most of its articles) appeals and soothes a few people. I doubt it has any significant influence

  8. Canadians rarely tire of bashing the US, but I have. It’s not fun anymore. And there’s no educational value to it. The “greatest country in the world” has a learning disability. I think it’s time for me to just sit back and watch you all bash yourselves.

    1. I most heartily agree (assuming you’re referring to the obsession with menus).

      I can’t see why the menus would be of the slightest interest to anybody except, possibly, the people who have to eat them.

  11. Not unlike the time FOX news criticized Obama for ordering a hamburger with Dijon mustard which was too “elitist”.

    1. Somer, that is the issue, HuffPo has picked something which isn’t an issue, given his terrible beliefs and behaviour a wide berth.
