You might have heard of the Lanai Cat Sanctuary (a no-kill operation) on one of the Hawaiian Islands, and if you haven’t, you can read about it in Yahoo News:
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary in Hawaii is home to nearly 500 cats of varying shapes and sizes. Visitors are welcome to pet any and all of the feline inhabitants… if they can find them: the cats are not confined to cages, but rather free to roam and explore the sanctuary. How fun is that?
The sanctuary is located on the small Hawaiian island of Lanai, and is 25,000 square feet. That’s a lot of space for a cat to roam! All kitties are available for either foster or adoption, and any cat that doesn’t find a home can spend the rest of its life at the sanctuary. The sanctuary is open to the public between 10 a.m. to 3.p.m every day.

If you’ve followed this site, you’ll know that my favorite wild cat species is Pallas’s Cat, Otocolobus manul, often called the manul (see here, for instance). It’s a denizen of Central Asia, and has short ears, long fur, big paws, and a fluffy tail, all signs that it’s adapted to cold climates.

Lovely Hawaiian cats. But, I do worry they could endanger rare birds on the islands. The sanctuary seems a safe place.
Feral cats on the islands are a serious threat to wildlife. It seems likely that the cats in this sanctuary are kept in the sanctuary grounds, and if so then this is on balance a good thing for all the critters.
The first three manul photos had me thinking they might be expressive but with only one expression. The next photos probably fed me wrong.

Surprised to see a place such as this in Hawaii but apparently even the extremely tough laws do not fix people problems. One of the most difficult places to take your pet, Hawaii. When I moved there several years back the quarantine was 4 long months. Our cat did the time, if you have the money. Seemed nuts at the time but that is Hawaii.
The Red River Zoo here in Fargo, ND has some Pallas Cats or manuls and is apparent;y one of the few places to successfully breed them. My wife and I sponsored the cats and one year, as a perk, we were allowed into their enclosure to meet them. They were wary but allowed us to get reasonably close and I got a few pictures. We were warned no to attempt to pet them, not that I would have tried anyway as I didn’t want to alarm them, but it was a wonderful experience.
Lanai looks a lot like my living room on a cold rainy day.
