Caturday felid trifecta: Bobcat climbs tall saguaro cactus, cat brain freezes, cheetah on Letterman

We have some video treats for you today (assuming you like cats). First up is a bobcat (Lynx rufus) that found itself on top of a 40-foot saguaro cactus in Arizona. You can find the story here; apparently the cat was chased up the cactus by a mountain lion protecting its cubs.

Isn’t it a lovely beast?

Of course you’re wondering two things: how the hell did it climb up there without getting ripped apart by thorns? And how did it get down? I don’t know the answer to the first question, but apparently it jumped down. I don’t know if that’s really true, but if it is it’s a long jump!

But there’s a video, too:

Here’s a gif showing cats getting brain freezes after eating quiescently frozen confections. Yes, brain freezes (also known as “ice cream headaches”) are real.

And here’s a lovely cheetah on Dave Letterman’s show before it went off the air. Have a look at its nonretractable claws, and listen to how d*gs are used to protect this threatened species:

As lagniappe, here’s a new Cat Meme; the first one I’ve seen involving Brexit. And it’s a good one:

  1. Great post.
And that bobcat – incredible. Prickles or death by mountain lion, although painful it seems the obvious choice although I bet it’s in it’s lair licking its paws.

  2. Compared to cheetahs that I have seen in the wild, that one looks possibly overweight. I wonder if it has sufficient exercise.

  3. Love the Bob cat story, I can relate to that, for I was on regular invert survey on a plot of land that backed up to a residential site. I was fortunate to witness a Labrador type dog chase a domestic cat up an Ash tree. I wasn’t carrying a camera at the time, and if I had it would not of been a digital one. Anyway I had got to within a few meters of the tree, the dog was still there, barking, like they do, when all of a sudden the cat jumped, landing momentarily on the dogs back. The dog yelp in pain, or shock for it made no effort to continue its harassment of the cat, which had made its escape final by scrambling over a 2 meter garden fence. The jump, forgot to mention, was not from the heady height of ~2o M, about half that. An event I’ll not forget, for I pass the site where it took place all the time, sadly the tree has long since gone. 😖

    1. The ash trees around Chicago have been devastated by the emerald ash borer. All the ones in my neighborhood are now stumps.

  4. The “Brexit” meme is a hoot. I’ve had many cats over the years, they all pulled that stunt except my Watson. I think that’s only because he didn’t know he was a cat.

    1. Would you believe there are already about a dozen “Hitler Rants” on the Brexit? The very best I’ve seen is this one where Hitler fills in the role of Boris Johnson:

      1. I was referring specifically to the picture of the cat, and commenting on typical cat behavior not making a political pronouncement or opinion on Brexit. I find others to be much more informed on the topic than I am and I’ll defer to their knowledge about it here.

        1. Sorry. When you said,

“The “Brexit” meme is a hoot.”

          I thought you’d find this amusing. 🙁

          1. I apologise for seeming to be curmudgeonly. My sympathy lies with the readers living in the EU who are affected by Brexit, some in adverse ways. I suspect they have trouble finding amusement in their situation. We in the US are facing the same situation with the upcoming TPP approval. I can’t image why intelligent people would give away their autonomy to corporate interests, or in the case of the EU reduce the efficacy of national interests without means of redress. It’s a difficult situation exacerbated by unethical opportunists.

Anyway, I’m ok if you’re ok 🙂 I don’t intend to be unpleasant.

          2. Ironical that you (as a USAnian) are pissed off with the TPP. In New Zealand there is very strong popular opposition to the TPP, for many reasons, and a large part of the loose anti-TPP coalition sees the TPP as Big Brother US leaning on New Zealand to enforce its economic interests.

Unfortunately our government is very much in the pro-Business camp and doesn’t want to listen to anyone else.

  5. Great Caturday. I had to smile when I could hear a d*g of the yappy persuasion going at it and the Bobcat just yawned disinterestedly, secure in the knowledge it was safe.

Love the meme! Exactly what Britain’s doing.

The behaviour of Farage and Johnson in particular, and to a slightly lesser extent Gove also pi$$es me off. They campaigned for Brexit, Farage for 16 years, then when it happens they’re off. Everyone else is left to clean up the mess they made.

    1. The “mess” you refer to was actually made by the >17 million people who voted to leave the bloated, corrupt, undemocratic, economy-wrecking bureaucratic monstrosity known as the EU.

I was one of those people, and I don’t regret my choice one bit. The departure of Gove, Johnson and Farage doesn’t bother me either. My vote was to leave the EU, not to appoint any of them as Prime Minister.

      1. Sounds like “the bloated, corrupt, undemocratic, economy-wrecking bureaucratic monstrosity” known as the UK was in good company then.

Well, the “BCUEBM” UK managed to fool the Scots and the Irish, but I’ll guess those will leave the UK soon. They will get better treatment in EU.

Though how you can call EU undemocratic after having a successful vote on leaving it is an odd twist of ‘logic’.

And why you continue to hoist your own petard here at the very mentioning of Brexit is also odd. Are you happily done with EU or are you not!? EU is happily done with UK, if they can get their act together and get out of the door already. [And stop bleating.]

        1. How someone of your intelligence can be wrong on so many levels I don’t know.

The problem lies with the European Commission(EC), the unelected bureaucrats who decide, until recently, everything that get puts before the European Parliament and is basically rubberstamped. It’s an exercise in ‘one size fits all’. Had it been known when we were first given the opportunity to join the European Economic Community what was actually in the minds of those of the same mind as Jean-Claude Junker we would not have voted to do so.

Since that date in the early 1970’s the ruling European elite now aided by those in the UK of the same mind we were in danger of being sucked into the worst socio-economic experiment in modern history. This vote is the first truly democratic vote in my memory, and that goes back a long way. And the result shook a lot of people.

The mess that you talk about it is the EU, and in particular the Euro zone. The majority of the fear is now in the EU, not with us, unless of course you see the EU as a comfort blanket, which had been so rudely snatched away.

It was a simple vote on a question decided by the Electoral Commission – In, or Out. Not great list of policies to consider. Just one simple, single question.

1,269,000 people voted to leave more than those who voted to stay.

I’ll bet we make a better success of the next century than those who decide to stay.

you are of course entitled to your opinions, and to express them, but they are your opinions and nothing to do with those of us who decide that the sovereignty of the these islands belongs to us, and not to the likes of Messrs Junker et al.

          Have a nice day.

    2. Yeah, the Brexit cat is onto something.

EU: OK, so you want out. Let’s start the process.
Britain: Nah… We just sit and wait.

Esp. Farage, who keeps his nice and cozy EU parliament seat. Hypocrite!

      1. He goes on about how the EU is unelected while he sits in the EU parliament seat he was elected to. His first speech in that parliament after Brexit was an “I told you so” speech which showed his character to a T. Complete slime ball.

  6. That cat meme at the end is great. It reminded me of the Robert Heinlein science fiction novel, The Door Into Summer, which included the tale of a cat who begged at the front door to go outside, but when the door was opened and he saw snow, he retreated to the back door and begged to be let out there instead. He was looking for the door into summer.
