From Katherine Dey Art Facebook page (and YouTube), we have a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Cake with Boston Creme Filling. This woman is a baking genius!
Tell the truth: would you eat this even if you knew it was a cake?
In case you want to make one, here’s a video:
Here’s a robot-voiced video showing the range of this woman’s art (she’s a nurse in New York, explaining some of the subjects). Not all of her cakes are gruesome! But the one of her husband’s head. . . oy!

I’d eat the roach or the human head, but would have serious issues eating a lot of the other things… especially dat booty.
I wouldn’t choose to eat any of the cakes, but could probably do so if necessary. I am reminded of Surrealism in general and Luis Bunuel in particular.
I know I shouldn’t like this but….
I usually eschew cakes, but I would make an exception for the roach cake.
A suggestion: Make the cream filling green.
Ick! Gross! Ick!
Love the roach.. yuck to the butt/head…
Finally — A cake you could leave in the fridge at the office and stand a chance of it still being there when you come back for it.
Now that’s strategic thinking. Thought of going into politics?
Litter box cakes are another good entry in the “would you eat it?” category – some of them look extremely realistic.
The roach, yes. Anything human…nope.
Oy, the video :-0
Those cakes are amazing, and amazingly gross. I don’t trust someone who would make them look that gross not to put gross things in them, too.
A new approach to dieting? It might work!
At 0:25 and 1:12 in the second video, notice the “babycakes”. These cakes would surely be hits at atheist parties!
My usual assumption is that those who spend a lot of time making their cakes look cool won’t spend much time making them taste very good. Supermarket cakes tend to be very sweet and use shortening rather than real butter. I find them inedible.
An alternative assumption is that someone putting that much care and attention into one part of a project is likely to put similar care and attention into all parts of the project.
Titivating food to make it look pretty (or in this case, spectacular!) does not necessarily mean that it will taste good but my experience is that very often great tasting food is also beautifully presented. Just slopping the food on the plate is indicative of a lack of care and attention that is likely to have affected the whole process of producing it.
As to supermarket cakes – I’d agree with you on that.
Are you referring to the cake itself, or the icing, or frosting on the cake?
I would prefer it over the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach filled Boston Cream cake.
I know a few people who would like an ass cake for their birthday . . .
How about a pig’s head as a leaving present for our late lamented Prime Minister?
Tell the truth: would you eat this even if you knew it was a cake?
Duh. It’s cake, for crying out loud.
My only concern would be if someone was trying to communicate something with the shape, but beyond that, there’s no logical reason why it should affect the taste or the nutritional value (give or take the content of the icing).
But seriously, haven’t we figured out by now not to trust our shallow instincts?
Personally I would be happy to eat a cake in the form of a cockroach and I doubt if anyone reading this thread has any doubts about the nutritional content of the cake. However, we know that many people with phobias cannot overcome them even when they know, rationally, that there is no danger.
A picture of a spider that is obviously a picture can nevertheless be sufficient to keep some arachnophobes out of a room. Loftily telling them not to trust their shallow instincts doesn’t really help.
Anything,if its a Cake.lol
Yuk! What inner compulsions is this person working off?
The only truly disturbing cakes, to me, are the baby cakes. I can hardly stomach them at this distance. The others are easily compartmentalized into edible representations in my mind.
OK. Those are just disturbing. Let THEM eat cake, not me.
Damn right I’d eat it. I’m not gonna turn down cake!
If I were dating that woman, though, I think I’d want separate beds…just in case.
Wow, she’s some baker.
I’ve had several friends send me links to that cockroach cake, saying I should use that for my wedding cake!
I’m tempted.
