  1. I spent a couple of hours yesterday going through the latest issue of ‘Dabiq’ (DAESH’s on-line magazine). It is impossible to read that and still believe that Islam isn’t a central part of their raison d’etre.

‘Inspire’ (Al Qaeda’s on-line magazine) includes reasons other than religion as their inspiration, but there’s none of that in Dabiq. This issue, which was released after the Paris attack, even has an article about a young man from Germany searching for the best terrorist group to join. He was unhappy until he found DAESH because none of the others fulfilled his religious needs.

  2. I read this years ago in Richard Pipes Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime:

In the words of The New Republic, “anti-imperialists” (of both the right and left variety) “loved Russia for her enemies.” {1995, p. 207)

I think the same thing is going on with ISIS, and the enemies of their enemies would rather see ISIS as political movement rather than a religious one.
