Caturday felids trifecta: Dogs displaced from their beds, moar cat eye makeup (with contest), and the world’s happiest cats

October 17, 2015 • 8:00 am

We again have three felid-related items for Caturday. The first, from Buzzfeed (of course), shows that d*gs instinctively recognize that cats are their superiors. It’s a series of pictures showing “17 dogs who just want their beds back.” I’ll put up just four of the photos. Hili, of course, might well have been included, as she is wont to displace Cyrus from his bed. A small selection:

This is from reddit, labeled, “She got to enjoy her new bed by herself on Christmas day. The next day, the cats made sure she didn’t get her hopes up.”

This cat is truly The Boss (again from reddit):

Also from reddit, with the caption, “The new ‘dog’ beds arrived.”

Even kittens have the Power! (From reddit).

Go see the other 13 at the BuzzFeed site.

More cat eye make-up from Scarlet Moon on Deviant Art. Any reader who does the best job of duplicating something like this will get a free, autographed copy of  WEIT, with, of course, a cat drawn in it. (only one winner among entries, deadline Oct. 31: Halloweeen!):facebook_1445071287957

Finally, again from BuzzFeed, “27 of the happiest cats in the world“. I’ll show a half dozen. (BuzzFeed of course thrives on these “listicles,” and I’m a sucker for them when they’re about cats).

This kitten hit the mother lode! An imgur photo labeled, “For me? You shouldn’t have!”

This cat is ecstatic on grass (and probably catnip too). From imgur:

From imgur. Tell me this cat doesn’t look satisfied!

A gif from giphy.com, labeled “I’m so happy you’re home!” Wouldn’t it be nice to have a cat who did this?

Talk about kicking a d*g when it’s down! This cat takes advantage of the Cone of Shame (from imgur):

Pictures like this, which show a cat using the Rong Toy, are almost a cliche of the internet. Still, this is a good one, as the cat is really happy! (From imgur, labeled “My cat being a jerk, and then laughing at me.”).

  1. The eye makeup is pretty amazing. I suppose one uses paint of some sort, and stencils to get a sharp line.

    1. I would have to ‘tweeze my brow hairs. This would earn me more teasing than I usually get around here.

    2. That would require artistic skills sufficient to draw a cat…then the ability to apply those skills on one’s self…in the mirror…without stabbing one’s self in the eye…and figuring out what sort of paints / pigments / makeup one can use without blinding one’s self…and that’s just the beginning….

I hope one of the guys here goes ahead and figures all that out. But said guy won’t be me….

          1. …whereas I just had to do a search simply to learn what “liquid eyeliner” is and why the ability to use it should be impressive….

            b&

          2. ….and now that you know how to apply it, you can start working on your submission for the contest!

    3. Not a man, but my cousin’s daughter has said she’ll have a go for me – she can do this stuff. Whether I’ll get around to it by Halloween is another matter. Whenever I do it, I’ll still send the pics to Jerry though.

  2. My daughter has a dog and a cat. The cat does not go near the dog (a Catahoula Leopard Dog) who takes no guff from the cat. Never does the cat go near the dog’s bed or food because he knows he would die instantly.

    1. My brother has a dog that is part that and part something else. A completely sweet but incredibly athletic d*g who is completely dominated by a Yorkie that is about the size of her head.

      1. For some reason, dogs often are intimidated by smaller dogs and puppies. My mutt is very friendly and likes meeting other dogs, but if approached by a puppy, even a friendly one, will act nervous and crouch. I’ve seen this with other dogs. I had a dog who was afraid of the puppy next door, but when it grew to be huge, he’d charge after it and try to fight it whenever he saw it. Even though the other dog was much larger, it would always run away.

    2. It’s likely to be a very small demand, but it sounds as if your cat needs lessons in “Superior Behaviour”, or something along those lines. I know that almost all cats have this naturally, so there isn’t much need for feline shrinks to, ummm, expand their patient’s egos. But there’s bound to be someone somewhere who can restore the natural balance of the universe to your part of it.

  3. I like the make-up (because it reminds me of body paint), but I’m not sure I have the years of practice needed to make my eyes justice.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a cat who did this?

I think most cats would try but maybe not so nimbly. I haven’t slowed it down, but you can just make out the swinging bait – a non-hook insect-like lure from a fish pole I bet. (At least I _hope_ it has its hook removed!)

  4. I’m a new reader of this blog and see that some time ago, a video consisting of clips of dogs vainly trying to dislodge cats who’d usurped their beds was posted on this site, but now the link is down, so for anyone interested, here is the link to another video of the same activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dod2VzUFNW0. I have no idea if it’s the same video because I never saw the first, but it’s highly amusing. Except for a few choice expletives, I don’t know from Polish, but I’d bet that any Polish cats in the video must be hissing “Psaikrew!” which in Polecatish is surely a literal call for dog’s blood.
I also call attention to an excellent article on Ben Carson on Alternet, written by Marty Kaplan, Norman Lear professor of entertainment, media and society at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/americas-newest-political-curse-ben-carson-neurosurgeon-who-cant-think. In addition to his trenchant, across-the-board take-down of Carson, Kaplan has some apt thoughts about the fallacy that an appreciation of literature and the arts in general is de facto humanizing. The Steiner essay he quotes from is worth finding in this regard. In this light, and in light of the discussion of this matter in Faith Vs. Fact, what is one to make of a recent article in the New Yorker on “reading therapy,” whose therapeutic claims go beyond a mere ‘humanizing’ effect; it also claims to have a spiritualizing effect? I see this as related to the extremely pernicious fallacy, which has it that those who aren’t sufficiently ‘spiritual’ can create only debased art, or worse.

    1. Aargh, Jenny, that last sounds like a most annoying article! Not sure if I want to look into it or not! Getting pretty sick of the hubris that insists on finding the sciences lacking.

  5. Please excuse and remove the multiple posts. I tried sending more than from one computer and nothing happened when I hit the “post” button; then sent from another computer. That one went through, then the other attempts appeared. I am very sorry.

  6. We had a Cat and two Dogs a few years ago, A Rottie, Border Collie and Tigger the Cat, who was a one off and lived to 22, anyway, there was only one Boss and she made it plain to them both, on one occassion my Son let out the Collie just as his Arch Enemy a Spaniel hove into view, the ruction was immediate and before we knew what was happening Tigger hurtles out of the Door and lands Claws extended on the back of the unfortunate Spaniel, the point she was making I think ,I may beat em both up,but no-one else will.lol She was the ofspring of a Feral Farm Moggie which may explain her belligerence.lol
