Tuesday: Hili dialogue (and Leon lagniappe)

August 18, 2015 • 6:15 am

It’s another day,  and N = N + 1 (the old programming language for “repeat what you just did”). The temperature will be high here today (with a chance of showers), and there was a loud but brief thunderstorm last night. Meanwhile in Dobrazyn, Hili has no mundane worries, but does show some ignorance of topology:

Hili: The Earth is round.
A: That’s true but it’s not a holy truth.
Hili: And I’m sitting on top of it.

In Polish:
Hili: Ziemia jest okrągła.
Ja: Prawda, ale nie święta prawda.
Hili: A ja siedzę na szczycie.
******
And meanwhile in the Polish mountains, Leon continues his hike-cum-nomfest. Yesterday a great tragedy struck: his staff forgot to take his hiking snacks!
Leon: My snacks are left there.

  1. If the Earth were truly spherical then Hili’s [ahemm] position would be solid. Well, reasonably solid.
    Well, defensible.
She’d need to be in a non-Copernican universes, and of preference at the intersection of the universe’s rotation axis with the surface of the (spherical) Earth. But being a cat, she can actually take that as axiomatic.
I wonder if anyone has worked out the gravitational wave signature of two cat’s egos coming into contact. Or indeed, two cat’s egos coming into the same universe – which also might be axiomatically impossible.
I think I may have just discovered a hole in our understanding of the basic physics of the universe. How appropriate that I’m listening to an Infinite Monkey Cage podcast on “what we don’t know”.

    1. Most of ’em, actually.

(Strictly speaking, the ‘repeat’ bit is usually expressed as ‘REPEAT … UNTIL’ or similar structure.
The N=N+1 is of course an increment.
