Chicago, gathering storm

April 14, 2015 • 8:00 am

There are a few odds and ends to post today before anything substantive goes up—if it does! Here’s a sunset photo of Chicago taken from my crib two evenings ago, right before the storm that night:

Chicago

I see from the dust spot at the upper left that I’ll need to get my sensor cleaned; dusty sensors are a recurring problem with Panasonic Lumix cameras. But it’s better to pay $50 to have someone clean the camera than to spend $350 for a new one.

  1. Yes, if you can get it cleaned for $50, that’s well worth it. With the huge popularity of digital now, there must b a thriving industry for cleaning the sensors — and presumably downward price pressure.

  2. The dust in this case is sufficiently cloud-like that not many will notice it.

The great thing about SLRs is that you can get to the sensor yourself — but make sure you know what you’re doing before you do so! That, and the manufacturers have realized that an exposed sensor is likely to collect dust in the first place and so have engineered all sorts of stuff into the cameras such that they rarely if ever need manual cleaning in the first place. And, even then, one of those “rocket blowers” (a variation on the turkey baster theme) is almost always all you need.

    1. I cringed when I saw stuff on my DSLR’s sensor so I tried the “sensor” clean function first thinking it would just be some sort of cruel placebo the engineers put in place. It worked though!

  3. I had dust on my mirrorless camera’s sensor. Mirrorless get dust on their sensors more often because there is no mirror in front of it. I could actually see what was there and easily cleaned it off with a cloth pen thingy.

  4. That’s a real nice photo! I’m hoping that our big windstorm brought you all some rain.
