Wednesday: Hili dialogue (and lagniappe)

February 18, 2015 • 4:40 am

Oy vey! Checking the temperture outside on my weather app, I find that it’s 3ºF (- 16ºC), and it will get colder today, with a predicted  low of -8ºF (- 22ºC). Tomorrow will be at least as cold. The door into summer is nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, soaking up sun through the window, Hili essays a bit of philosophy:

A: What are you thinking about?
Hili: I know that the issue of free will in humans is controversial, but I suppose nobody questions free will in cats?

In Polish:
Ja: Nad czym myślisz?
Hili: Ja wiem, że kwestia wolnej woli u ludzi jest kontrowersyjna, ale chyba nikt nie kwestionuje wolnej woli kotów?(Zdjęcie: Sarah Lawson)

As lagnaippe, here is a short, weather-related cat video. The English is a bit wonky but ignore that, for here’s Sparta the cat desperately seeking the Door to Inside. The YouTube description:

After a hudge snowstorm my cat was lost in the snow then he return in the house like a bulldozer. No animal abuse here and no one throwing the cat, sad to hear that from troll people ;( . Another video will be made but on the other side.

A slow-motion version with scary sound effects is here.

Finally, this photograph, which I know nothing about, has been making the rounds on the Internet:

  1. I don’t mind the cold as long as it is sunny. However, I’m so exhausted I don’t know how this day is going to go.

      1. I’ve been getting a lot of sleep but I had a migraine yesterday and today and I think the medication makes me sleepy. Also, I suspect I have a thyroid problem bit I have too much going on right now to pursue correcting it (which involves a big fight with my doctor).

I usually walk around 6km minimum each day so I consider that my exercise for now.

        1. That sounds like great exercise. Wish I got that much. The migraine thing is very difficult.

I had hypothyroidism. You really need to start the investigation as soon as you can, because the process can be a lengthy one with multiple tests and then regular checkups to titrate the dosage of the meds (synthetic thyroxin), but you can fit it into a normal working schedule. No problem. The great thing is that the meds start working almost immediately! You’ll feel way more energetic and any excess weight will likely melt away. Your other symptoms will dissipate too. Also, in my case after a year, my thyroid corrected itself, and no more meds.

          Hyperthyroidism requires a different treatment.

          1. Yes, two of my doctors suspect hypothyroidism which explains my intermittent and annoying heart palpitations. I had asked my GP 5 years ago to send me to an endo & he made a huge deal out of it and really resisted. Since I was already exhausted, I didn’t feel up to arguing with him.

Now, dealing with other health issues, two of my doctors have told me that they think I have hypothyroidism and this is totally unrelated to my current health issue.

So, once I get this current one dealt with in about a month or so, I’m going to start in on my doctor again.

  2. What I find intriguing is the fact that, yes no doubt Quite Cold Kitty, totally himself physically desirous of warmth and those noms, ‘reason’ed that since Sparta’s staff opened that door, it would be okay to swiftly dash himself in the direction of the woman’s head.

But. How did Sparta ‘reason’ that it would be okay to (even try to) dive through the snowbank, that the door ‘down’ there and not visible to him from his outside – side — would be open and that he, once bulldozed through, would not be slamming upside another barrier ? !

    Isn’t this ‘thinking’ called … … deduction ?

    1. re that one ‘nope’ ? ‘Spose Baby stepped out with one pink, very exposed paw and THAT was it — that that one was quite enough out the Door to Winter and that Baby flashed herself back inside, not ?

      1. O! Everyone else ‘got’ that, didn’t they ?

I am sorry — for commenting thus!
I am soooo slow to the par – taaaay ( this unevolved trait [I apologize, Dear Dr Darwin], had for decades I am told, bamboozles even me ! )

          1. That’s funny ! AND true ! but not for my suckin’ in marijuana.

Once I quit from my first one as the teenager – truckstop waitress, (Thelma and) Louise Sawyer – / Iowa – style just off of Interstate 80 at age 18, … … 17 years later (.finally. and for realz) with the filterless Pall Mall, the Kool and the Merit and then, post them, the five years’ stint on inhaled Swisher Sweets (which I’d commenced … … cuz I had “reasoned” cigarillos’d stop me cold, wouldn’t they, off of smokes which, not only did they NOT, but I loved them … … apparently!), I was fortunate enough to have by then the brains to not put myself in to too much danger of losing my livelihood — cuz of .that. Mary Jane !

I guess I was just born with such (DNA –) naiveté as to never evolve straightaway from it, let alone, over decades — such as of this dearest darling and her countenance of bamboozlement:

ps Actually, now that I think back on it, “the first one?” That first one was lit up with ‘borrowed’ kitchen matches (alongside older and most enticingly BAAAAD, older bro) literally out behind the woodshed: cornhusks rolled up with dried (.l a w n.) grass – innards ! AaaawFUL! Simply horrid. ‘Course he was only ten and I eight. Noooo h i g h there AT ALL!

  3. Our Maine Coon cat mix is probably happy that he doesn’t live in Maine. He has recently done nopes as quickly as the nope in the photo.

  4. “The quickest nope, that ever noped” cat should take a lesson from the intrepid Leon the Cat!

  5. Oh noes, Hili’s been eclipsed by the vid & footprint. This will not do!

    (Hilarious vid & footprint, though. 😀 )

  6. There is something fishy with the videos. Look at the first video at 0:31, and the video with the sound effect at 0:20, when the cat looks back. The red fence is not the same. If I am mistaken, forgive me, for I am sleepy as hell.
