Well, it may be cold where you are, but I doubt it’s as cold as Chicago. The temperature yesterday when I awoke, which will be the same as today, was -6° F (-21°C), and with the wind it will feel like -20°F today (-29°C). I broke out my balaclava to prevent my face from freezing on the ten-minute walk to work, something I do about once a year. But tomorrow we’ll have a balmy 16°F (-9°C), so it will be positively tropical. I heard yesterday that parts of southern Canada were colder than Antarctica!
It must be a sign of my dotage that I write about the weather (do I dare to eat a peach?), but I’m really not that bothered by the cold except, like yesterday, when it’s so extreme that it hurts your face a lot to be outside. I’m told, however, that it’s mild enough in Dobrzyn for Hili to go outside for an hour or more. And there the Furry Princess of Poland is philosophizing, but in a solipsistic way:
Hili: Without cats there would be no puppeteers.
A: Why do you think not?
Hili: Someone must have watched a cat and seen how fine it is to pull strings.
Hili: Bez kotów nie było by kukiełkarzy.
Ja: Dlaczego tak sądzisz?
Hili: Musieli nas podglądać i zobaczyć jak wspaniale jest pociągać za sznurki.

Blue sky in London & likely to hit 15c later – the strong Atlantic storm that has caused a lot of trouble in Scotland with winds gusting over 100mph has dragged up warm air across western Europe.
Unseasonably warm – quite happy to swap!
I swear that there are times during a Chicago winter, that the wind was in my face 360 degrees around some of the downtown buildings.
If in the movie ‘Being John Malkovich’ a cat could have entered the portal into Malkovich’s brain he would have probably been an even better puppeteer.
Oh, Jerry, you really should walk to work more often.
(sorry… I’ll get my coat…)
Up here in Sudbury it is a relatively balmy -17C. Don’t know what that would be in F.
Here in Southern Ontario (which I jokingly refer to as the “sunny south” to my friends an hour north of me who are in the snow belt), a couple of nights ago, I went out to dinner & it was -18C and that was without windchill. Yesterday was -9C and my email update that tells me each day the high and low (through IFTTT) amusingly said “the current temperature is -9C, the high will be -9C, the low will be -9C. So it was -9C with or without sun.
Today we are at -8C. The wind is killer though and that makes it -20C or so.
Not sure there’s any organism better at string-pulling than a cat. Indeed, they can even pull strings from the inside…many of my shirts have ever-expanding holes on the shoulders from Baihu pulling at those strings….

My wife (fiancée at the time) was astonished that I could arrive in Siberian at -30C and retain all my fleshy protuberances without problems. The Noggins have a saying that “there is no such thing as bad weather – only bad clothing”.
Another ten degrees and you wouldn’t have needed to specify the scale….
