  1. What, no subtitle?

I can imagine people mistaking it for a pro-religion screed on how “faith” stands up to “fact.” Of course, I can imagine people doing a lot of silly things. I can’t imagine why …

  2. I noticed that in the blurb in mentions you tackle “revelation”. I know Thomas Paine had a lot to say about this in his ‘Age of Reason’; divine revelation being relevant only to those who have “received” it i.e you cannot believe someone who says they have “heard the word of God” for you have not experienced it for yourself so you would not know if they were lying or not. Did you by any chance mention Paine in the book? Other than that, I hope that I can get it from my library soon!

  3. WEIT is easily one of my favorites and I look forward to Faith vs. Fact. But I’m unclear on something. In both titles, “Why” is used and not “How” (Why Evolution Is True, and Faith vs. Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible). Why is it Why and not How? Thank you.

    1. I’d say, common usage. The title implies that the book answers the question, “Why is evolution true”. It would be unusual for someone to ask, “How is evolution true?”.

  4. Awesome achievement! Great cover–no doubt about the position inside. Glad the book’s also on Kindle. Thanks for letting us tag along while you did all the work. Major congratulations!

  5. I think I caught Amazon cheating a bit there. It presents your book as “Frequently Bought Together” with Loftus.

    Either cheat, or time machine.

      1. And pre-orders are counted toward the first weeks’ sales, which help a book get onto the NYT Bestsellers list. So, pre-order! And congrats, Jerry. Can’t wait to read it.

    1. My pre-order guarantees it will arrive at my door without any planning or effort on my part. I don’t part with a dime until it ships.

      1. I meant more along the lines of, “The books will arrive that day, and there’ll be lots of fanfare on this here site on that day as well.”

  6. Fantastic! FACTION (Neil de G Tyson)is infinitely more interesting and fascinating than any amount of FICTION – particularly that of the faith variety. No doubt that your book will be a great read.

  7. Jerry,
Will you be doing a book tour in spring? If so, will you visit Harvard to sign our books? I think you spoke there for WEIT, if I remember correctly.

  8. Had no idea it took so long to get a book out after it was done. Thought things moved faster these days.

    1. These days a lot of authors bypass the traditional publisher, and a lot of publishers bypass the traditional editor. Maybe that’s partly why a lot of potential readers bypass traditional books.
I think Jerry is trying to make something better than average (or better than Sturgeon’s 90%), and is too much of a scholar to go for max speed. Not that the speed of his writing and editing, on top of teaching, blwebsiteging and globetrotting, doesn’t put most of us would-be authors to shame.

      1. “…and a lot of publishers bypass the traditional editor…”

And don’t we readers suffer for that!

  9. O, just lovely, Dr Coyne !

I concur with someone else who ( rather paraphrased I am here ) commented that allweall got to truly enjoy flyin’ along back of / its ( ! quite literal ! ) drafting from the Albatross’ trucking momentum — without any of its slog.

I nota bene, too, at where amazon took up your request of a bit ago — to finally get correctly spelled in its introductory spiel Dr Dawkin’s last name !

    Blue

  10. Alas I fear the faithful will react predictably, turning the foxhole atheist on its head: facts versus faith is an argument against facts, not faith.

If the non-believers are encouraged and only one fence-sitter is persuaded it’s worth the effort! Congrats!

    1. I fear the faithful will react predictably

“When you toss a stick into a pack of d*gs, the one that gets hit yelps the loudest”.

  11. Cant wait to read this. Unfortunately I am guessing that the people who need to digest this are going to be the last to read it.

Prediction: Book will be attacked by “critics” who will refuse to read it.

    1. But surely, no one would write an Amazon review without reading the book, would they?

  12. Congratulations, Jerry. It’s a great feeling to see your work set at last in print, a thing on its own in the world–and with a long life ahead of it. May it prosper!

  13. I just saw this online:

“Dear haters: I have so much more for you to be made at, please be patient.”

  14. Pre-ordered twice already, because I’d forgotten I’d already pre-ordered it. Oh well, someone will get a nice gift.

Also pre-ordered Hitch’s “new” one, Why Religion is Immoral, and Other Interventions, which is made up of transcripts from debates. Probably won’t have needed much editing either, given the way that guy could formulate his thoughts and pull disparate facts out of thin air. I often thought he spoke even better than than he wrote.

      1. This probably is the right place to mention that Walter Kaufmann’s book The Faith of a Heretic, mentioned here often and available only used at high prices at places like ABE books, is being reprinted! It’s coming out in June. I actually found that out while I was looking at Amazon in order to pre-order Jerry’s book!

  15. WOOO HOOOO, congrats, Jerry!

So one more round of proof-reading and it’s done? Nice. Enjoy sending off the final final final version and have a lovely celebratory meal (of which WE WANT PICS).

Let us know when it’s completely out of your hands and we’ll start suggesting topics for your next book (JUST KIDDING).

  16. However, you will have so many people on your side…. and I bet you change the minds of a lot of fence-sitters!

  17. I pre-ordered a few weeks back and can’t wait to receive and read.

Interesting how Amazon is cross selling it (Frequently Bought Together) with “Christianity is Not Great” by John Loftus. Hopefully it’s a good book. I wonder if the “Frequently Bought Together” is legit or just some fancy algorithm that lumps like books/subjects together.

  18. Congratulations Jerry! That’s one more part of the book writing process to check off the list, it’s in the home stretch now!

  19. I like the sound of that ‘NYT best selling author’ bit they put in the blurb. Hopefully this will also make the list.

  20. I will certainly buy it, but I await information on any book tours, where I would drive far to buy it and greet you.

  21. Excellent!

I also look forward to the reviews-of-reviews that’ll no doubt happen.

Yes, I know that it’s very bad form and all but still!

  22. What – no leatherbound, gilded, tooled, and marbled-paper edition? Jerry, you’ve missed a trick there!

  23. Looking forward to it. Next up, you should show off your diversity by writing a cook book.
