I’m too dispirited to display a bunch of wildlife today, but I do my best. Reader Graham Ramsey sends some photos of Big Game taken by his daughter. The notes:
My daughter, Kate has recently returned from South Africa. She was on her gap year working at a residential child care unit.
Anyhow, she took some time out to experience the animals of that beautiful country and I’ve attached some of her pictures. They were taken on safari apart from the cheetah which was taken on one of these “Walk with cheetahs” affairs.
She said it purred exactly like our cat.
I needn’t identify these beasts, as you all know them.
Why can’t I do this some day?

Oh dear – you put up a picture of a Re#ublican!
Isn’t the Republican mascot usually an Asian elephant rather than an African one?
um… no idea! But I thought that like d*gs we should be careful not to spell that word out…
I’m a foreigner, and therefore do not know any better.
The RINO? 🙂
More like the viciously-voracious all-consuming hungry hungry hippo….

Keep your pecker up mate and hopefully you’ll vote those feckers out in 2 years.
Nice pictures!
Seeing the hippo, reminds me of my visit to S.A. Our guide took us for a boat ride on a large river. As we approached a family of hippos swimming, he kept the boat a good hundred feet or so distant, and said these beasts can be very temperamental and can move very fast in the water. He always had to keep his hand on the throttle and the boat pointed away from them. As a result, I didn’t get any really good pictures.
Hippos much more dangerous than people realise. I think they kill more humans than any other of the big game, including crocs.
I have walked onto a herd of hippo’s before. It’s an easy mistake to make, and terrifying!
These pics make me home sick!
Goodness gracious. Beautiful, and just what I needed to brighten up this horrible morning. It is so nice to see a person standing over a grand beast such as this one, and it be LIVING!

There must be a South African reader who works at a university or wildlife Park & could invite Professor Ceiling Cat to go & pet a leopard, a cheetah or a lion (cub!) in exchange for a lecture…
I suppose our esteemed host could find a couple reasons to find himself in South Africa. A safari and a walk with some big cats. All work related, of course!
The lion has a striking black mane. I had heard that the females prefer that sort of mane in their males.
You too can pat a big cat someday! Take a well deserved holiday to Africa ! After all The Albatross is done and dusted!
Thanks for the great photos. I needed a break from the bad political news…though I thought the same thing as the first comments when I saw that pachyderm.
I like the lion photo, don’t know exactly why. Probably the monster is very manly and looks a little bit idiot. :)))
