Best of last month’s cat videos

June 5, 2013 • 1:06 pm

This selection of gems comes from only one month on the internet (this May), and demonstrates once again the eternal awesomeness of The Felid.

The panoply of clips begins with Skateboarding Cat, which we’ve seen before, but the rest are new to this site.

My favorites are the cat who steals a cigarette (second clip; did the owner train that moggie to bring him a smoke?) and the cat having a fractious encounter with a banana peel:

  1. Were those baby birds actually suckling? So cute how mama could find their heads without really looking.

    1. One of the better videos — if someone had only had second thoughts about the musical soundtrack. As it is, we have to find this person and shoot them before we speculate on how this interesting scenario came about.

Okay, not really. Maybe we can just tie them down for a while and run a tape of that score on continuous loop.

      1. Methinks the bullet to the back of the head would be the more merciful of the two options….

I shit you not, the last time I was at Disneyland, many many many many many many moons ago, whoever I was with convinced me to go on the “It’s a Small World” ride…and it broke down just far enough into the ride that we couldn’t really get out and walk. I’m still surprised to this day that a) I can somehow manage to pretend to some modicum of sanity; and II) I haven’t racked up some horrific body count of my own. The total exposure must somehow, mercifully, praise be unto the Invisible Pink Unicorn (MPBUHHH), have been below the threshold.

Has anybody checked the travel records of the Boston Marathon bomber and the Sandy Hook and Aurora shooters and the others to see if they’d all been to any Disney-run amusement parks recently? I’m just askin’….

        1. Ben, really?? You may not believe this, but the same thing happened to me! Yes, I was on the “It’s a Small, Small World” ride at Disneyworld and yes, it broke down in the middle and I had to sit there and listen to the theme song over and over and over before it finally started up again.

I still remember what I said when I got off the ride. I had gone on it alone (my husband was at a convention) and had been seated next to a mother and her young daughter. As we left the boat I turned to her, smiled, and asked “There was a song playing, wasn’t there … do you remember it’s name?”

She started to tell me and I started to laugh.

    2. Birds don’t suckle. They do crowd under mama for warmth and protection, though.

Ducklings are precocial birds; they are able to eat and drink by themselves shortly after they hatch.

  2. Very funny, though I have to admit that I found the cigarette cat more worrying than humorous, giving the toxicity of nicotine.

  3. My favorites are the cat who steals a cigarette (second clip; did the owner train that moggie to bring him a smoke?)

No, most likely that Moggie was snatching the cigarette for himself. When my wife and I were still smokers, our cats would steal our cigarettes if we accidentally left them out. We’d find them on the floor all chewed up.

    1. Apparently cats can be quite attracted to tobacco; dangerously so, as nicotine is toxic to them.

  4. Somewhat OT, except to cat lovers.

I just came across a George R. R. Martin sci-fi novel (entirely unrelated to Game of Thrones) called Tuf Voyaging. Tuf loves cats and they appear in the stories in amusing and darkly amusing ways. I won’t provide any spoilers.

Per Wiki: “The novel concerns the (mis)adventures of Haviland Tuf, an exceptionally tall, bald, very pale, overweight, phlegmatic, vegetarian, cat-loving but otherwise solitary space trader. Due to the venality and cutthroat tactics of the party chartering his one-man trading vessel, Tuf inadvertently becomes master of Ark, an ancient, 30-kilometer-long “seedship,” a very powerful warship with advanced ecological engineering capabilities. Tuf travels the galaxy, offering his services to worlds with environmental problems, and sometimes imposing solutions of his own.”

  5. The cat with the cigarette slays me. I love the way she straightens it with her paw after she pulls it out.
