Why didn’t God heal them?

April 11, 2013 • 11:56 am

I’m at Oakland University today and tomorrow, so posting will be light, though Greg has promised a guest post on bats.

Speaking of chiropterans, tomorrow I’ll be visiting a bat facility that has a bunch of vampire bats (and 15 other species) and a special ways of feeding them blood.  The researchers get cow blood from a slaughterhouse, remove the antibiotics in that blood (cows are given prophylactic antibiotics in the U.S.), and serve the purified blood in a continuous stream to the bats. No worries—I’ll take pictures!

In the meantime, here’s more feline LOLziness from Gary Larson. Remember these?

      1. Ah good, another Arsenal spporter. They left it late, then scored three in the last five minutes. You see? Miracles do happen… 🙂

  1. cows are given prophylactic antibiotics in the U.S.

The antibiotics aren’t prophylactic; they’re just to encourage growth. Someone noticed that cows get heavier when they’re kept on antibiotics, so now everyone in the US does it.

Fattening the wallets of ranchers is a perfectly good reason for filling the world with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, don’t you think?

  2. I understand Larson caught some flack for the comic with the cat on wooden legs. He pointed out how stupid the cat had to be to put the SECOND paw into the tank with the piranha.
