I just heard Michele Bachmann, whose standing as a Republican candidate in the Iowa polls is rapidly slipping, say this on the news:
“I believe in miracles because we know, I know, the one who gives miracles.”
Yep, she knows God as a BFF, and none of the other God-fearing Republicans do.
Oh my gosh, such arrogance! Who would vote for this woman? Even the religious should be appalled by her, what a narcissist.
And yet, they would expect it of a man. They know a “woman’s place” and in their warped view, it’s as sheep, not shepherd, so little chance she’ll get to lead the nation.
Makes me wonder, with The Family infiltrating and subversively tweaking the minds of our politicians, whether this had anything to do with Clinton settling for Sec of State and saying that she would not go for President, afterward. Hmm…
“Oh my gosh such deluded arrogance.” FIFY, since, you know, there isn’t “a one who gives miracles”.
Pretty inarticulate, too.
/@
Who would vote for this woman?” The whackos just like her in MN 6th – that’s who – which is is home of one of the on-going tea parties (some of those who haven’t quite got the message yet.) This is uncomfortably close as I live in MN 3rd and she is an embarrassment to us all. The sane folks in MN 6th keep encouraging her to return to her Iowa roots – permanently.
I would be happy, when she gets trounced like a Big East team in a bowl game, if she would just either a) admit that her ‘god’ is impotent, causally, or b) that she has misinterpreted this and probably much much else.
Not holding your breath, I hope.
Would be rather nice, though, if she became so frustrated with her skydaddy that she quit him altogether and went atheist. Maybe, in time, her mind could be freed and made useful, after all?
“Her mind could be made useful”? Only as an example of abysmal ignorance and failure, something always to be expected from “Barking mad” Bachmann.
Another example of those in power to use religion to influence the masses and get what they want?
So basically she’s saying that she expects God to step in and rig the caucuses in her favor, because she hasn’t got a prayer of winning fairly, on her own merits.
+1
ditto
How would you rank Perry, Santorum and Bachmann in terms of merit?
Perry and Bachmann are insane. For more on Santorum, google him.
“google him”… bwaahahaha!
It’s not my ranking that matters, nor God’s. It should be up to Iowa voters to weigh the candidates, without God putting a thumb on the scale.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/bachmann-makes-final-pitch-to-iowa-faithful/?hp
well…..Tebow already makes for one awesome BFF. She might get her feelings hurt.
But Perry is the one God sent. His quote from Isaiah is quite specific. The same book of the Bible that predicted Jesus, predicts Perry.
“He sparked loud applause when boasted that that he “protected the unborn” by signing a budget in Texas that stripped Planned Parenthood of state financing so “there are 12 less Planned Parenthood clinics open today.””
So he hates women, children and mothers in particular!
And so do Republicans in Iowa, too, apparently.
It certainly appears that the right in the U.S. are far more willing to make demonstrable appeals to their belief in God’s intervention in the world on their side. But I wonder whether this is true; it could be a sort of illusion, given that the post 9/11 agenda is far more aware of those points being raised.
I haven’t yet read Pinker’s new book, but who would have thought that one could make a robust case that human affairs are becoming less violent? Similarly might our view of fundamentalism’s bolder intrusions in the American political discourse be, counter intuitively, wrong?
Has any political scientist carried out a comparative research of the speeches of, say, a noughties candidate in the Republican caucuses with, say, their equivalents in the fifties, sixties or seventies?
I like that: “noughties.” Reminds me of Bush II in office, though that would be spelled “naughties.” Naughty for trashing separation of church and state, just for starters.
Pretty common over here in the U.K.
Parenthetically, Nick Broomfield aired a documentary over Yule on Channel 4, I think, of his hatchet job on Sarah Palin – who I assume you Americans think of as Michele Bachmann mark one – and excellent, chilling viewing it was, too.
Rupert Murdoch emerges as her puppet-master; he could be on his way out over here after the phone-tapping scandal and the shutdown of his ‘News of the World’. You statesiders could give one little push by lobbying one of the broadcasters to buy the documentary. It’s mesmeric; makes you as irate as ben goren reading Phil, newgenesisres or David Roemer.
Wow. Anyway to see it online? Maybe we can bypass the mainstream media and send it viral through YouTube and Vimeo. Might you have a link?
Doc,
Just did a quick search including the director’s and Palin’s name + youtube. The whole 2-hour documentary doesn’t appear to be up. But you can see the trailer here; there’s plenty of linked comment about the project. NB seems to have receieved pretty bad reviews from the British press because he didn’t actually get to speak to la Palin one-on-one; but that misses the point.
The documentary is about her insidious Godfather-like behaviour, testified by bewildered fellow Wasilans, appalled at her amorality. The best bit is the conversation with McCain’s ex-campaign manager expressing his contempt for her colossal stupidity, hypocrisy and God-given talent for the spectacularly embarrassing.
Link below; hope it doesn’t come up as a video.

By the way,
John Cleese on Sarah Palin:
“Michael Palin is no longer the funniest Palin on the planet.”
LOL!
They all Palin comparison
Actually, I made it come up as video, and the video got me hooked. I hope to see the entire production, and soon. Perhaps there’s a way someone like Sean Faircloth could have the least sane, most Bachman-paralled bits used to demonstrate to even the thickest heads just how dangerous this political cult madness is.
Spread the Word, Doc! Evangelise and Proselytise, Sister!
Ah-yayis! Purrr-raise the Ceiling Cat, Brother!
Actually, Dr. Coyne must know Sean Faircloth directly. Maybe he could make mention? Sean is part of Richard Dawkins Foundation US, and Dr. Coyne knows Dr. Dawkins, right?
Git on the case, Jerra. Dis religious demotic sho’ ‘nuf bedduh in ‘merican than that thar Oxbridge way o’ parleyin’.

Thanks, Jim. Checked both. Will read in bits and pieces, especially when I need some anger and laughter. How dare she even present herself as human?!
She’s waning. Tha *is* the miracle.
The “miracle” is that she hasn’t been committed to a mental institution!
It’s deja vu all over again.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/22/palin-god-will-do-the-right-thing-on-election-day/
Hopefully God will come through for Michele Bachmann just like he did for Sarah Palin.
And he did! Maybe she was right after all!
Gawd did do the right thing in that election: he smacked her and Dumbo in the head and sent them packing.
You should be living in this loony-bin. It’s been all god all the time from her and Santorum in particular. Ron Paul makes Newt seem almost sane and Romney is just one of the regular guys (and one of the .1% I believe.
Mike in south central Iowa
We’ll be saved from evangelicals by a mormon… makes your head spin.
I don’t care what religion a candidate believes in as long as they keep it out of their decision making where it comes to policy. If you allow God’s word into legislature we can look forward to the antiquated ideas that God condoned such as slavery, genocide, murder and human sacrifice and all the other great things that God believed in.
Good luck seeing that from a Republican candidate- Huntsman seems to be the only candidate who isn’t interested in promoting his religiosity as part of his platform and his only real chance of getting the nomination is if Newt, Mitt, Ron, Rick, and Michelle all spontaneously die in the next two months.
The Republican party wants candidates who get their religion all over their politics right now.
Bachmann and company always remind me of the closing paragraph, sentence actually, in Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He is clothed in clerical garb and has just bought and taken some amyl nitrates at a drug store – for his heart – and this is his description:
“God’s mercy on you swine!” I shouted at two Marines coming out of the men’s room.
They looked at me, but said nothing. By this time I was laughing crazily. But it made no difference. I was just another fucked-up cleric with a bad heart. Shit, they’ll love me down at the Brown Palace. I took another big hit of the amyl, and by the time I got to the bar my heart was full of joy. I felt like a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger … a Man on the Move, and just sick enough to be totally confident.
But there is confident and then there is confident with Jehovah and Jesus in your back pocket – which has to be that “monster reincarnation” in spades. As Hitchens put it:
The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Well past time to put away the things of childhood ….
I honestly don’t understand the concept of a “miracle” within the context of an election. Does she expect God to remove voters’ “free will” *cough* and change their minds, forcing them to elect her? I’m confused (or she is).
Maybe she expects God to transport her bodily to an alternate universe where voters actually like her. (Which would be fine with me, come to think of it.)
It frankly pisses me off that political journalists are happy to let remarks like this pass without pointing out their obvious incoherence or trying to pin down the candidates on exactly what the heck they mean.
They should have at least made some reference to or comparison with the “purity of our precious bodily fluids” ….
Wouldn’t really square with their dogma about Jehovah supposedly granting free will would it? [And supposedly getting in a snit because Adam and Eve exercised that ability.]
But then again consistency was never a strong suit of the religious, from the pew warmers [“Please park your reason before entering the premises”] to the pulpit thunderers to the haughty theologians – so to speak. [“Evidence?! I don’t need no stinking evidence!”]
“…getting in a snit…”
Good one, simultaneously onomatopoeic and perplexingly obscure. Like it.
You are both confused. The difference is that she doesn’t know it.
You don’t understand the very low bar that miracles are measured by these days. You really don’t need divine intervention anymore to get a miracle nowadays, just luck or coincidences (e.g. all the leading candidates suffer fatal heart attacks). A proper miracle would be if I win the caucus (when my name is not even in the ballot).
Republicans are notorious for removing Democrats right to vote for barely legal or totally illegal methods. A lawsuit for electoral fraud is proceeding slowly through the Ohio courts.
In many other countries, their ‘normal’ behavior would result in a year of outrage and headlines but in the US the faux media pays no mind. Electoral fraud is too complex for those interested only in the marriages and dalliances of pop tarts and the semi famous.
Ron Paul makes her sound grounded, though. He is a total wack job.
Rumor has it that Obama will pick Secretary Clinton as his VP running mate. I’m hoping Jill Stein comes in as a third party and shakes things up.
We could use a woman President, but Bachman is coming off as just a very aggressive religoius den mother.
What? Like Thatcher? I remember sitting in a pub in 1987 at the age of 27, 2 nights after “The Iron Lady” had won her third election.
My mate, the same age as me, walked in and said, “I’m gonna get drunk. That f**king woman has ruined the best years of my life.” And he was a feminist.
Right now, the only politician I have any respect for is Alan Grayson. He’s 100% for separation of church and state, and all the rest of the Constitution. His take on the plan Republicans had, as their alternative to Obamacare, had two steps:
#1: Don’t get sick.
#2. If you do get sick, die quickly.
(How else can for-profit health insurance companies maximize profits for their stake holders?)
I usually agree with republicans on “Obamacare”… but only after thoroughly reminding them that “it’s” in actuality a Republican plan (and that everything they dislike about it was added by the right).
We need a rally cry from the left to fix “Romneycare”… (they’ve won the argument that it’s flawed… we need to make sure everyone knows that it’s conservatives who made it flawed in the first place).
I’m currently working on a long diatribe on why *for profit* health insurance is a complete scam that only accomplishes the “redistribution of wealth” from taxpayers into the pockets of private health insurance companies.
Aren’t conservatives against the redistribution of wealth?
Conservatives either have all the wealth (leaders) or think they have a shot at gaining all the wealth (followers), so to them, redistributing means sharing with the 99%.
As for insurance companies, it would highjack this thread to share with you what I learned while practicing surgery. You are welcome to email me, though. Let me know if you need/want the address.
“We could use a woman President, …” well, I don’t know if we could or not but, strangely enough, the lunatic is saying the same thing herself (about herself) today. http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/136500248.html
We could use a good president, woman or otherwise. Barack Obama’s “blackness” is of no relevance to the quality of his presidency. I doubt that Hillary Clinton would have been much better. All Obama is counting on is the fact that the GOP field absolutely sucks.
So exactly how will god effect this outcome? Will he sneak into the minds of the voters and override their freely made choice?
The same way he helps Tebow will football games. Send in a batch Iowans to vote for her in the last quarter.
My prediction:
Romney
Paul
Santorum
Gingrich
Perry
Bachmann
Of course it doesn’t matter, this is going to be Clinton vs. Dole part II
So that is where God was today. Tim Tebow was expecting his help today with the Chiefs.
Rather than a Bachmann victory, couldn’t we just have the 10 plagues again?
If she wins, you’ll have both!
Bachmann and Santorum ought to run as an independent team – the Xtian somedamnthingoranother party. They’d siphon off enough votes from whoever runs as an R to ensure a D victory.
… the Xtian somedamnthingoranother party.
How about “Apocalypse Now”?
I call ‘conspiracy.’ Obama has shown himself to be anti-freedom and pro-rich that the Republicans are throwing the stupid at him to make sure he wins again:-)
And when she loses she will go, “God had other plans for me.”
“two men say they’re Jesus, one of them must be wrong” – Dire Straits (I think)
Both are wrong. Knopfler mangles it, again.
That seems the most probable to me… but as I’m merely agnostic I don’t like to walk out on that limb; I don’t believe anything. Actually I guess I don’t believe in “facts” or the concept of a fact, or rather I believe that logic only works if you already believe the same thing. I like to argue that I can logically prove that you can’t logically prove anything… unfortunately I always win which means I must be wrong.
Besides… *two men say they’re Jesus, both are wrong*; just my opinion, but not nearly as poetic, it just screws up the rhythm.
LMAO I was behind Rick Perry, and you saw what happened to his campaign. Ask Lot, I’m just a sucker for bets.
I’m behind Bachman, so that when the time is right, I can prevent the nuclear catastrophe she’d produce. Oh, the means of preventing it you ask? If she wasn’t so lazy, and avoided taking the stairs, I’d have the perfect opportunity, once she got to the top, but no, she uses the freaking elevator. Sure, I’m all powerful, but have you seen how much weight it takes to break one of those things? I’M BETTER OFF WAITING FOR THE MIRACLE that snaps one of the vital cords. She thinks I cause miracles? Well, I’d respond to that, but I’d need to know, does she want to bet on that?
I think all Republican nominees had better believe in miracles this time around, because it will take a miracle to see any of them elected. Just this Aussie’s 2 cents’ worth.
Personally, against anyone but Obama, I think Romney would have a chance, but he seems to have jumped the shark (or is it sofa?) in recent weeks, so he’s obviously not confident of anything.
Bachman should be very happy that America is not founded on Judeo-Christian values, for if it was she and many of her colleagues and fellow believers would make a very unfortunate lot — in the Bible a false prophet must be put to death!
Praise Ceiling Cat we’re not a Christian nation.
Also, as a women she’d be expected to stay home and know her place, rather than enjoying the success resulting from women’s suffrage movements pushing for more equal rights for the last century or so.
“I believe in miracles because we know, I know, the one who gives miracles.”
I guess, given the results from Iowa, that she didn’t know Him, Her or It quite as well as she thought she did. Though whether that translates into a “crisis of conscience or faith” for her or not is an open though interesting question.
Yep. God was behind her, and he just gave her a good kick in the ass.
