Fall: University of Chicago

November 1, 2013 • 5:07 am

October has gone again, has gone again, and in Virginia the chinkapins are falling.

But in Chicago the leaves are turning; not as good a show as last year, but we have some nice bits. Here are four photos I took yesterday right outside my office, on the way to where I get lunch noms. The student union (“Reynolds Club”) is the building to the left (click all photos to enlarge):

Here’s the door (left) I go through on the way to get noms:

And the red tree to the right in the photos above. Can anyone identify it? (I can’t.)

I return, and storms in Chicago

September 19, 2013 • 8:42 am

I’ve returned to the U.S., but it will take a few days before I’m up to speed and able to deal with all the creationism, accommodationism, and other mishigas I usually write about. Also, I have 471 photos, and hope to show you some of the scenery and food of Poland as well as a fairly detailed overview of Auschwitz. (Don’t worry: I’m not going to post all the photos I took!)

The Polish Rationalists Facebook page, Polskie Stowarzyszenie Racjonalistów, has posted a bunch of pictures of my three talks in Warsaw and Cracow, as well as of our jaunts around Warsaw for sightseeing. You can see their photos here.  I want to thank that organization and the Polish Skeptics for their terrific hospitality, and to give a special shout-out to Kaja Bryx, who did the lion’s share of organizing my visit (no easy task!). You’ll see Kaja in red (shielding me with an umbrella from the storms in Warsaw) at the link above. And of course I’m immensely grateful to my hosts in Dobrzyn, Andrzej and Malgorzata, for providing friendship, great food, a restful atmosphere, and Hili, the Rationalist Cat.

In the meantime, back to business. There was a storm the evening I left Chicago, and one last night when I returned.  I took photos of both.

Here’s the one on Sept. 2:

Storms

And last night’s, which was a humdinger. It came in very quickly around sunset and dumped a ton of rain, accompanied by a lot of lightning and thunder. The oncoming storm was impressive as it blotted out the last rays of the sun.  Five minutes after I took this photo, one couldn’t see the city skyline:

Chicago: gathering storms

September 5, 2013 • 1:15 am

The weather was strange last Friday: hot and sunny most of the day, with a storm rolling in suddenly about 5 p.m.

Storm 1

In the end there wasn’t much rain, and the storm cleared at sunset, leaving a view of clear sky above the city topped with cloud, like a parfait:

Storm 2

I believe this was taken on Saturday—another stormy day.

100 great photos from 2012

August 18, 2013 • 10:21 am

Alert reader Lance called my attention to a nice collection of photographs—”Top 100 photos of the year” from 2012, at the Socialphy site.

Note that photos #100 and #54 are views of the Chicago skyline (#100 is particularly striking): a favorite subject of mine. You can see those on the site, but I’ll also post a dozen of my other favorites. If you’re a photography buff, or simply like gorgeous images, though, go see them all.

Where I’ll eat this weekend

August 16, 2013 • 12:13 pm

I’ve just gotten over a tenacious and pernicious gastrointestinal bug, which has been pretty debilitating for over six weeks. They never found out what it was (note: a culture at the U of C hospitals costs $1000!), but told me that it would eventually vanish, which it did. (It wasn’t cyclosporiasis, which produced an epidemic in the Midwest in the last two months.)

The unfortunate byproduct of this malady was that I had to eat bland food for a long time.  And the mere thought of vegetables and alcohol put me off.  The vegetables I could live without, but not beer and wine!  Now that my alimentary canal is in fine shape, I had my first drink in weeks yesterday, and this weekend I’m celebrating by going here for rib tips and links:

They’re the best in Chicago, and everyone I’ve ever taken there (it’s takeout only) has begged to go back on return visits.

I guess I should start eating vegetables again. . .
