  1. This one works well imagining the voice of Anthony Quinn as he portrayed Auda in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) — even catches that brusqueness :

    It was written then.

  2. The barmaid gets it! Most of the Western world either can’t or won’t get it. The wisdom of the barmaid consists in her apparent belief that you should pay attention because sometimes people really mean what they say!!

    1. Oh I think most people do pay attention; but they pay much more attention to the fact that any criticism pf a minority culture or belief is pretty much automatically seen as a hate-speech™ xxx-phobic™ attack™ on a person’s essential identity™. Bah, humbug.

      1. Yep. That makes me think of the meme that I believe was posted on this blog some weeks ago:
Person 1: I don’t think that women should have any rights and LGBT people should be executed.
Person 2: Wow! What a complete primitive asshole you are! You must be a conservative.
Person 1: No, actually I am a Muslim and those are my religious beliefs.
Person 2: Oh, I’m so sorry!! I apologize!! I hope you don’t think I’m Islamophobic.

Yeah, kinda seems like that’s where we are these days…

  3. It is fun to watch Muslims squirm on talk shows when asked about this sort of thing.

There is a Muslim immigrant TV and radio personality here who has long had various gigs on the public broadcaster’s channels. Very sharp guy. He is almost always the interviewer rather than interviewee, but in one of the few times he was interviewed he was asked if he thought homosexuality should be banned. He responded that in the perfect society there would be no homosexuals, but society isn’t perfect (meaning Islamic) just yet. And this guy is considered a “liberal” Muslim.
