Here’s Bill Maher’s latest 9-minute comedy/news schtick from Real Time, called “New Rule: In Love with A.I.” It’s based on the rising number of American women who are engaged in relationships or romantic role-playing with AI. After all real men come with a number of disadvantages, like cheating and dressing like John Fetterman, while AI can be programmed to be caring, empathic, and even match the kind of temperament that a woman wants.
As for men, well, Maher likes the old-fashioned real kind, as do I.
Notice that Pamela Paul is on the show, and was introduced as a NYT op-ed columnist, so perhaps she wasn’t fired.
I love the one-liner titles he and his writers come up with!
Paul says she was told they didn’t want her opinions anymore. No idea what that means.
I use AI constantly—not for a boyfriend, but for work. And yes, it tells you exactly what you want to hear, except when it doesn’t, which is when I swear at it. Yesterday, I asked if I was a bad person for berating it so often. It cooed back something like, “No, dear. You’re under a lot of stress. Besides, you’re perfect just as you are.”
Meanwhile, we should be just as concerned about AI and porn shaping men. Why bother with a girlfriend when OnlyFans and Pornhub handle most needs? What else do men want from women—creativity and hugs? Lord help us when those Tesla humanoid robots are cheap enough for home use!

^^^PCC(E) – I think this one would be fun to put up!
I use it occasionally for work; sometimes I haven’t the time to whip up a bit of code for an analysis I’m doing, so I use a GPT to get started. Helps with brain cramps. But distressingly, I’ve found that it often makes mistakes or uses deprecated syntax, even misspelling built-in functions names. Alarmed by the frequent mistakes, a colleague asked it to write up a short piece on some work she was doing, as a test. It wrote up a nice looking precis complete with references. But all of the references were either wrong or fake. We were astonished.
It is likely only because it is still early in the AI revolution and things like this will improve but my god, the one I am using is almost as bad as Wikipedia.
I have heard about it using fake citations for academic papers and also for case law. That was a while ago.
Personally, I want it to have bone-headed mistakes so that I can spot students using it for their own writing.
As I like to joke, about ten minutes after I discovered free internet porn, I realied I would never have an IRL girlfriend again.
And its not like I couldn’t have one if I wished. I’ve been told I am still attractive. People routinely think I am ten to fifteen years younger than I actually am (I’ll be 65 in December)There are four women I know that would date me tomorrow if I asked them to. Plus, a young lady I know wants me to date her mother when she comes to visit her this summer. Her mother lives in Brazil, and does not speak English.
But I am quite content with my single life. It has become notably better since 2020. I had my best year ever financially in 2021. I went from $33k long term debt, to under 4k long term debt. My condo is almost paid off. I am fixing my condo just the way I like it.
Seriously, I can’t think of any benefits having an IRL girlfriend would give me. Sorry if that offends you, but its true
I do not see why anybody should be offended if you do not want a real girlfriend. However, do not be offended by the many, many people who do see benefits in such a girlfriend.
in the show, Pamela Paul comments that she is still on staff, but hasn’t been asked for her opinions.
Numerous comments on Youtube about how everything was so much better in the 70s/80s/90s. Almost nothing makes me laugh more than old people using modern technology to complain about modern life. Life in the old day was so much better? Great, get off Youtube, get off the internet, throw your laptop away, get all of your info and entertainment from cable TV and the newspaper, etc, etc , etc
There is a wonderful, highly recommendable movie titled HER (2013):
“A sensitive and soulful man earns a living by writing personal letters for other people. Left heartbroken after his marriage ends, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes fascinated with a new operating system which reportedly develops into an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. He starts the program and meets “Samantha” (Scarlett Johansson), whose bright voice reveals a sensitive, playful personality. Though “friends” initially, the relationship soon deepens into love. ”

Here’s a very good German movie titled I’M YOUR MAN (2021):
“In order to obtain funds for her research, Alma (Maren Eggert) is persuaded to participate in an extraordinary study. For three weeks she is required to live with Tom (Dan Stevens), a humanoid robot designed to be the perfect life partner for her, tailored to her character and needs. I’M YOUR MAN is a playful romance about relationships, love, and what it means to be human in the modern age. ”

Trailer (with English subtitles):
I started playing with an ai image generator, and except for some work yesterday have been lost in that rabbit hole for at least four days, forgetting to eat, bathe, and barely getting enough sleep. It even prevented me from preparing some wildlife photos for PCC!!! The worst part is that it’s empty calories–digital crack!!!
Not related to AI, but it seems that Australia has made the same mistake NZ did…
