Jesus ‘n’ Mo ‘n’ polygamy

The new Jesus and Mo strip, called “charlatan”, came with this note:

Here’s the wikipedia page. They coyly don’t mention the wives.

The page, called “Islam and Mormonism” involves comparisons of the two faiths, but the artist is wrong: there’s a section called “polygamy and celestial marriage,” which does refer to the parallel practice of “concubines.” (The entry also mentions two other articles.)

On the other hand, Mo still has a right to beef if he objects to being a role model for the “charlatan” (which surely applies to Mo himself).

  1. Polygamy is wrong!

It’s either multiamory or polyphilia. Mixing Greek and Latin roots is unacceptable!

  2. Religious believers are usually psychologically prepared to deal with uncanny similarities between Special Revelations from God. If the untrue religion came about either concurrent with the true one or after the true one, it’s inferior copying. They will scoff at how inferior the copy is, it’s just so obvious.

If the untrue religion came before the true one — while containing suspiciously similar critical elements — it’s a little trickier. How could the false faith steal ideas which aren’t yet there to steal?

One ingenious solution is to claim that God wanted to mentally prepare people for the coming revelation by making them comfortable and familiar with elements they might otherwise object to. While this might sooth the doubts of believers, skeptics still find it kinda fishy.

That’s why we need faith, I guess: the willingness to bend over backwards to give the benefit of the doubt.

    1. The question that immediately springs to my mind is how do we know Christianity isn’t God mentally preparing us for a religion still to come?

In other words, the argument requires special pleading for the favoured religion of the arguer.

    2. One word :

      Theosophy

Major founding figure : Helena Blavatsky

Expression of an ancient idea : Prisca theologia – the higher understanding of religious varieties as reflections of a universal god… and all that bullhonky.

The objective if theosophy : dialectical synthesis of all the world religions, spirituality and knowledge – like science – into a sublated form.

  3. “God wanted to mentally prepare people. . .” I have heard Christians use that to explain away pre-Christian myths about virgin births and resurrections.
