If you want to subscribe to comment threads without leaving the “sub” comment that puzzles some new readers, we have a tip from Reader Gregory:
I’ve found that I can now subscribe without leaving a permanent comment on the page like I used to need to do. If you leave a comment, say “Sub”, and then delete the comment, you will still receive the comment-delivery confirmation email that allows you to get updates whenever someone else leaves a comment on the page.I like it because it leads to a cleaner page and fewer people will ask “What does ‘sub’ mean?”
Also, we’re still working on the site upgrade. If you’ve had any problems, or have any suggestions, please leave them in the thread below.
Evolution Theory is a creation theory of intelligent design. Science and religion both require a great deal of faith. =
We’ll just assume this is tongue-in-cheek.
Kind of a poor joke for this early in the morning.
Sub
Or you could say that Intelligent Design is a Creation theory that developed through the Darwinian model of Evolution. Those of us who are aware of the Dover case know what I mean. No faith is required to support that assertion!
Excellent!
I think you’re at the wrong website, pal.
Everything is working for me.
Any way to have comments numbered? Depending on the topic I read them all but when additional comments are added I have to scroll through and try to remember where I left off. I don’t really like to be notified every time a new comment is added. Jams up my email. Thanks.
No the numbering is good, like when you refer to an earlier comment under 4.
I’d only like to be notified when someone responds to my comment. I might need to add some clarification or so..
All eight fingerprinting methods appear to be personally identifying users with adequate precision.
I’ve been selecting the “notify me” but only receive notifications for replies to my comments.
Which “Notify” option do you use?
Clicking the “notify” box.
Ah, I get a choice: “Notify me of new comments via email”, and “Notify me of new posts via email”, using MS Edge. If I tick the first one I end up getting an email every time anyone comments, so I’ve stopped that.
To add to my confusion, I’ve found a WordPress site, https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/106437183/posts/3068456187, where I can get the bell thingie top right, and see your reply. I’m going to post this now on Jerry’s site, then go to the WordPress site and try to post an answer to you there.
Oh I only get one box using Safari.
Test reply from WordPress site.
Yeah I get these because you replied to me but I won’t get all replies to the post like I used to.
Everything works fine from my laptop, which is a Google pixelbook, but on the iPhone, it doesn’t remember my username, email address and I have to enter it each time. I alway check off save my name,…”
It might be better if you get a free WordPress account. But I don’t know. With that, you can provide your own avatar.
My only suggestion is about the left and right margins. In Firefox, there is about 1″ of unused screen space on the margins, making the middle working area quite narrow.
I don’t know if other people see this.
Its similar in Safari, but for that browser if I narrow the width of the window a bit, the left and right columns pop down to the bottom, and the middle field of text takes over so its nice and wide. I do very much like this effect and hope that any tweaks to come don’t disable that.
There is one thing…
I read the site and comment with my WordPress account. My only problem with the new set is that the bar that appears at the top of a lot of WordPress sites when I’m logged in doesn’t appear here anymore. The bar is useful because it displays a notification badge (in the shape of a bell) which changes appearance when people reply to my comments and also lists replies to my comments when I click on it.
I’d like it back if possible.
Other than that, everything is fine, especially the ability to edit comments and fox my steaks.
I miss that feature too. Another WP website I visit regularly also lost that feature.
I’d like to have it back because that is how I kept track of conversations here at WEIT.
Yes, definitely this…
I also miss seeing the notification bell here, but an other WordPress website I visit still has it. Also I think my WordPress homepage does.
I’d like to subscribe to comments for a post without receiving an email verification every time. This subscription confirmation is a new thing, for me anyway. I can understand why WordPress does this in general but there ought to be a way to specify whyevolutionistrue.com as a “friendly” website in order to avoid the need to confirm. The “Notify me of new comments via email” checkbox should suffice. Going even further, commenting should be enough without the checkbox. Why wouldn’t I want to receive replies to my comments?
I second this request, although I think we may not get a solution. I suspect it is a mechanism to prevent people from harassing other people by signing them up for email. Two factor authorization that prevents me from forcing email on you.
See my next comment, #10!
I did! And I just unfollowed and re-followed. Will see what happens next.
I have set things so that I get an email on every comment but now I get one on EVERY comment, even for posts that I haven’t read yet. I will have to change my settings.
I just discovered something. WEIT was not listed as a “followed site” in one part of WordPress but was in another. However, in the part where it was shown as followed, it ignored any changes I made in notification settings. My guess was that the recent changes in WEIT had affected its status as one of my followed sites. So I unfollowed it and then followed it again. Doing this gave me a completely new set of notification options! I checked them all and now it lets me comment without clicking any checkboxes at all. This may not be the set of options I settle on eventually but this unfollow/refollow seems to have fixed some things.
I can’t see how to unfollow WEIT on WordPress! In the “manage followed sites” page I can’t find an unfollow or delete option.
Have been getting this by email to follow comments made:
“[Subscribe] Comments on Why Evolution Is True – please confirm”
It used to be, I only had to check the WP box *once* for the entire WEIT site to be “subbed”, now it seems WP wants a confirmation for comes up for *every* post.
